By embracing the SAP cloud ERP solution, Mitr Phol, a global leader in the sugar industry and a pioneer in sustainable development, is set to revolutionize its business operations. This strategic move is more than a mere upgrade; it’s a comprehensive transformation towards a more agile, innovative, and scalable future.

The collaboration between SAP Indochina and Mitr Phol Group is not new. With a history spanning over 15 years, this partnership has witnessed significant milestones, with Mitr Phol utilizing various SAP solutions to streamline its operations. However, the current shift to RISE with SAP marks a new era in this relationship, emphasizing a future-proof approach to business processes and operations.

Thailand’s digital economy, currently the second largest in Southeast Asia, is projected to see substantial growth in the coming years. This growth trajectory aligns with the nation’s strategic focus on embracing key technologies like AI, IoT, big data analytics, robotics, and drone technology. In this context, Mitr Phol’s decision to upgrade to SAP’s cloud ERP solution is not just a business decision but a strategic alignment with national priorities.

Mitr Phol’s transition to RISE with SAP symbolizes a shift towards a more unified and cloud-based ERP system. This change is pivotal in addressing operational challenges such as inflexibility and data silos, paving the way for a more integrated and comprehensive digital ecosystem. The move is expected to enhance operational efficiency and employee experiences, leveraging tools like SAP SuccessFactors and SAP Signavio.

Mitr Phol’s Digital Evolution with SAP Cloud ERP Solution

Mitr Phol’s digital strategy extends beyond operational efficiency. The group is committed to sustainability, aiming for a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of its SAP data center. This commitment aligns with its broader goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050. Additionally, the adoption of SAP’s cloud ERP solution is part of Mitr Phol’s broader innovation strategy, focusing on intelligent farming, smart manufacturing, and leveraging advanced digital and AI platforms.

Kulwipa Piyawattanametha, Managing Director at SAP Indochina, emphasizes the importance of adopting innovative solutions like Business AI and automation to drive productivity and sustainable business outcomes. For Mitr Phol, this transition to a cloud-based system signifies not just a technological upgrade but a strategic move to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Athikom Kanchanavibhu, Executive Vice President of Digital and Technology Transformation at Mitr Phol Group, highlights the group’s focus on a data-driven and AI transformation strategy. Leveraging RISE with SAP on platforms like Microsoft Azure is expected to catalyze Mitr Phol’s transformation, driving continuous innovation and a sustainable growth pathway.

The adoption of SAP’s cloud ERP solution by Mitr Phol Group is a testament to the evolving landscape of business technology and the increasing importance of digital agility and innovation. This strategic move not only aligns with Thailand’s digital economy goals but also positions Mitr Phol at the forefront of technological advancement in the agro-industrial sector. With this transition, Mitr Phol is set to redefine its operational efficiency, sustainability, and innovation capabilities, paving the way for a future-proof and digitally-driven business model.

PCS Thailand has announced its largest investment in 50 years — the deployment of SAP SuccessFactors cloud HR solution which will streamline HR processes and replace legacy systems. This is a significant move for the company and one that signals a real commitment to embrace new technologies in order to stay competitive.

A subsidiary of OCS Group, PCS Thailand is a leading international provider of integrated facility management services. It has been in business for more than five decades and has established a strong reputation for quality and reliability. PCS Thailand has 20 branches and 5 security training centers across the country, making it one of the largest businesses under the OCS Group. It provides essential facilities management services to more than 5,000 customers in Thailand, helping them to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and achieve their sustainability goals.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to change the way they work and shift their preferences in terms of employee experience in their organizations. In response, PCS Thailand has been on a digital transformation journey to provide efficient services to its customers and support geographically dispersed employees and operations. This shift has required PCS Thailand to improve its technology infrastructure and adopt new ways of working in order to meet the needs of its employees and customers.

After careful consideration, PCS Thailand decided that SAP SuccessFactors was the best option to align with its digital transformation approach. The cloud-based human resources (HR) solution deployment is aimed at improving process efficiencies for its workforce across the country, from operating staff to frontline employees. Implementing SAP SuccessFactors would enable PCS Thailand to improve communication and collaboration among people, as well as provide them with access to up-to-date information and resources.

PCS Thailand has now joined the likes of Thai Beverage and Kuok Singapore in reinventing HR through the use of innovative technologies that empower employees. The transformation project enables employees to have more control over their work lives and careers, resulting in a more motivated and productive workforce.

David McGeown, Director of Transformation and Technology at PCS Thailand, stated that the company’s digital transformation approach centers around improving services and giving customers more accurate information about those offerings. He added that the company has reached a tipping point where it can no longer sustain expansion by adding staff to existing processes.

“So, a big part of our digital transformation strategy is to simplify work processes by replacing paper-based tasks with automated processes. This will help remove the burden of personal and employment administration tasks and will make it easier for our front-line employees to perform their work,” he further explained.

Implementing SAP’s Cloud HR Solution

SAP SuccessFactors solutions will allow PCS Thailand to manage and automate administrative tasks for each employee’s role. According to the press release, employees will be able to clock in and out while working onsite, as well as request holidays via mobile device. This streamlined process makes it easier for employees to stay connected with their work schedule, whether they are at the office or on the go.

Moreover, the organization will also be able to access the new HR system via a Line application, which is an app that frontline personnel are already familiar with from using it in their everyday life. This capability will be made possible by an enhanced Social Media Integration Service offered by SAP.

McGeown stated that PCS can free itself from the responsibility of managing infrastructure and scale up as needed with the help of cloud technologies. He noted that the company has a highly aggressive growth plan to raise the number of employees by 15 percent in 2022 and 15 percent in 2023. He remarked:

“Moving to the cloud gives us opportunities to scale without increasing cost in an exponential manner. We will know exactly how much it will cost us to increase our employee base while using SAP SuccessFactors.”

Honored to have been chosen as PCS Thailand’s in their HR modernization efforts, SAP Indochina Managing Director Atul Tuli is confident that the customer, with the use of cutting-edge intelligent HR solutions, will be able to better care for its employees, in keeping with the company’s core value.

“This core value of care translates into giving employees greater access to their own information, giving the HR team the ability to provide better support and guidance to front-line workers as well as an ability to have two-way communications with employees,” he concluded.

The latest SAP cloud strategy focused on flexibility, business continuity, and sustainability has recently been announced in Thailand.

In April, SAP reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2022, emphasising the consistent growth of its cloud business and incorporating the current cloud backlog. The German enterprise software giant has revealed a strong cloud momentum as evident in the current cloud backlog and SAP S/4HANA cloud revenue, reaching double-digit growth. This follows the remarkable performance of the Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) offering RISE with SAP in 2021 as a springboard for the first months of this year.

In Thailand, the tech giant intends to drive the transformation to the cloud for companies in both the private and public sectors by utilising its most recent business direction plan, which includes the concept of the ‘Cloud Only’ strategy. This is primarily aimed at helping enterprises improve their efficiency, flexibility, and agility. It can be noted that Dr. Sak Segkhoonthod, Advisor of Digital Transformation at the Electronic Transaction Development Agency, told a seminar held in January that as the country’s present regulations for budget disbursement can be easily maintained on the cloud, organisations in the public sector can migrate to the cloud with relative ease.

According to SAP Indochina Managing Director Atul Tuli, the global COVID-19 pandemic has shown itself to be a fast-acting driver for governments and businesses to expedite their digital transformation journeys and embrace cloud-based technologies for growth and sustainability. He also believes that enterprises can innovate ahead of their competition, operate through times of volatility in the market, and boost cost savings by using a cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that provides real-time business analytics.

Advancing the SAP Cloud Strategy for the “Intelligent, Sustainable Enterprise”

As per Gartner’s projections, end-user expenditure on public cloud services around the globe is expected to increase by 20.4{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} in 2022, reaching a total of $494.7 billion. In particular, cloud computing spending in Thailand is expected to increase by 36.6{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} to reach 40.8 billion baht in 2022. This also indicates that as the pandemic unfolds, the country will embrace the “golden age of digital transformation” with cloud solutions playing a crucial role in helping enterprises transform sustainably.

“Today, businesses can easily migrate their applications and workloads to the cloud with the ability to scale and enjoy the benefit of cloud’s pay-per-use model to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO). We believe that the ‘Cloud Only’ strategy will help drive SAP Thailand’s cloud compound annual growth rate (CAGR) by 51{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} by 2025,” SAP MD Atul Tuli further explained.

In terms of achieving the “Intelligent, Sustainable Enterprise” vision, SAP Indochina Key Account Sales Leader Kulwipa Praditphollert stated that SAP has taken the initiative to supply forward-thinking businesses with real-time data and technology, intending to empower and enable them to seek sustainability and long-term growth and efficiency. She added:

“Over the past years, we have supported customers in various industries, including retail, healthcare, chemical, e-commerce, and offered them solutions ranging from supply chain, procurement, human resource management to customer experience management.”

Helping SMEs Future-Proof Their Operations

“Transformational Talent: The impact of the Great Resignation on Digital Transformation in APJ’s SMEs”, a study recently conducted by SAP and commissioned Dynata, revealed that 68{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of Thai small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) agreed that having technology partners who can assist with digital transformation is an absolute necessity for them to survive and thrive. Moreover, 66{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of SMEs reported that they were at a loss as to how to get started.

SAP Indochina Head of Mid Market Noppadon Chareonthong stated that there are more than 70 partners in the ecosystem that play a significant role in SAP Thailand’s engagements with customers in the SME segment. He added that partners are essential in providing guidance and assistance to customers in terms of running their business and implementing SAP systems.

“As 80{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of SAP customers worldwide are SMEs, we have worked tirelessly to help SMEs customers in Thailand embark on their digital transformation journey towards becoming Intelligent, Sustainable Enterprise to create a strong and sustainable digital core in the future,” he further said.

Adopting digital technologies such as SAP cloud-based solutions presents a major opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand to pave the way for sustainable recovery and successfully prepare their businesses for the “Next Normal.”

In April, SAP and Oxford Economics surveyed 600 people across six Southeast Asian nations — Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand — with 400 coming from SMEs and 200 from larger corporations. Titled “Digital, resilient, and experience-driven: How enterprises in SEA can prepare for the new economy”, the regional study revealed significant challenges in key business areas of enterprises and growth opportunities for them in a post-pandemic environment.

COVID-19 has intensified the need to further digitalise business processes in order to make organisations more resilient, especially for SMEs. Implementing business software has been one of the most popular and effective options companies have taken to empower digital resiliency that is needed to adapt to the “Next Normal”. In particular, SAP and Oxford Economics’ survey showed that SMEs in Thailand are primarily concerned with lowering prices for their goods and services and providing user-friendly digital experiences as a secondary goal for improving customer and employee experiences.

Atul Tuli, Managing Director at SAP Indochina, believes that a large number of organisations are still finding it difficult to fully optimise their approach towards integrating new digital technologies to transform the way they operate and do business. He explained:

“At SAP, 80{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of our customers worldwide are SMEs. SAP helps Thai SMEs customers embark on the digital transformation journey and transform their business into an intelligent enterprise across diverse industries such as Retail, Healthcare, and Consumer. We found that they are now facing significant challenges in the areas of talent attraction and retention, cloud adoption, and gaining insights from data.”

Enabling Digital Transformation in Thailand Through SAP Cloud-Based Solutions

SAP’s cloud business rose by 18{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} in the Asia-Pacific region in 2020, making it a third of the company’s total revenue. Specifically, the German tech giant’s concierge service to the Intelligent Enterprise RISE with SAP has been gaining traction globally since its introduction in January this year. During a regional media briefing on the sidelines of SAPPHIRE NOW 2021, Scott Russell, former SAP APJ President and is now SAP Executive Board Member and Lead of Customer Success, said that more than 100 customers have already signed up for the Business Transformation-as-a-Service (BTaaS) offering.

Noppadon Chareonthong, SAP Sales Director, Thailand and Emerging Market, stressed that SMEs are the backbone of the Thai economy and that cloud-based services will play a critical role in boosting operational capability as the country adapts to the post-COVID landscape. He then cited two examples of businesses that have already transformed their processes to stay resilient on the cloud: DoHome and Thai Medical Glove.

Leading comprehensive retail and wholesale construction materials and home decoration business DoHome decided to embark on a digital transformation journey and shifted away from its traditional business model in order to expand its operations. The company leveraged SAP solutions to help the management better understand situations in real-time and make more effective decisions during these unprecedented times. Meanwhile, Thai Medical Glove, one of the major rubber glove manufacturers in SEA, also used cloud technologies including RISE with SAP to transform their company into an intelligent enterprise, removing complexity with simplified engagement and guided journeys.

For Chareonthong, SAP cloud-based solutions will boost the competitiveness of SMEs to engage rapidly in digital transformation and empower them to bounce back strongly. He maintained:

“SAP is here to support and ready to be the trusted partner to offer cloud-based solutions like RISE with SAP and other comprehensive solutions that will help business transform holistically by changing the whole culture and mindset and redesigning business processes to unlock new ways of running business.”

The SAP Ariba Guided Buying capability within the SAP Ariba Buying solution helped Betagro Group — one of the leading agro-industrial and food corporations in Thailand — enhance process efficiencies, save costs through automation and standardisation, as well as improve collaboration with suppliers.

This year, SAP Ariba has been awarded the Top Rated Award in the Procurement Software category by TrustRadius. The recognition was given based entirely on more than 150 verified customer reviews. Clients that have optimised SAP Ariba solutions for their digital procurement transformation include major businesses such as Siam City Cement and Pruksa Real Estate. Reflecting on the significant uptake in terms of customer adoption, Atul Tuli, Managing Director of SAP Indochina, said:

“We are seeing an increasing demand from our customers for the automation of procurement processes and the consolidation of supply chain management. COVID-19 has underscored the urgent need for every company to become an intelligent enterprise and the most resilient companies were those that embraced technology to transform their business processes.”

Recently, SAP revealed that Betagro Group has extended its investment in SAP Ariba solutions to optimise spend management, efficiently manage potential disruptions, and further digitalise its end-to-end procurement processes. Procurement has evolved into a strategic function for Betagro Group, one that can drive value and provide the groundwork for the company’s future growth. In 2008, Betagro Group began transforming its operations in collaboration with SAP.

“Betagro’s renewed investment in SAP Ariba solutions will extend the benefits to its growing network of suppliers. By fostering stronger relationships with its business partners, Betagro can provide more value for its customers too,” the SAP Indochina MD added.

Betagro Group Leverages SAP Ariba Guided Buying

Betagro Group has been using SAP Ariba for sourcing, contracts, catalogs, supplier information management, and supplier collaboration for more than a decade now. As a result of the expenditure analysis insights, the company has made better sourcing decisions and discovered alternative sources of supply on a single network.

According to Dr. Thanomvong Taepaisitphongse, Chief Administrative Officer at Betagro Group, the company achieved more than 200 sourcing events with over 300 contracts created digitally through the SAP Ariba Network last year. The network is the largest business-to-business (B2B) marketplace that creates dynamic and virtual collaboration with millions of suppliers and other trading partners. Commenting on Betagro Group’s long-standing business relationship with SAP, he said:

“Successful adoption requires much more than technology. Strategic partnership is key to helping us holistically transform our business into an intelligent enterprise.”

Aside from providing Betagro users with a simplified buying experience for purchasing indirect goods and services in and out of the office, the SAP Ariba Guided Buying capability within the SAP Ariba Buying solution enabled the company to:

  • Allow employees to purchase what they need from the company’s approved suppliers on their mobile devices at agreed pricing and under corporate purchasing policy.
  • Better manage supplier collaboration and enhance efficiency with digital purchase orders and invoices.
  • Boost process efficiencies, reduce costs through automation and standardisation, and improve collaboration with suppliers.

Moreover, Betagro Group aims to further enhance the user experience for its employees and suppliers across Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar by renewing the SAP Ariba Strategic Sourcing Suite and leveraging additional SAP Ariba solutions for Strategic Sourcing, Buying, Supplier Lifecycle and Performance, and Commerce Automation. Dr. Taepaisitphongse disclosed:

“Now that we have optimised our spend on indirect materials, we plan to utilise SAP Ariba solutions to help manage our spend on direct materials too. This will help Betagro optimise our inventory, raw material costs, and manufacturing efficiency.”

25-year IT veteran Atul Tuli has recently been promoted as Managing Director to deliver the Intelligent Enterprise with SAP in Indochina.

In the recent six months, some SAP executive roles in Asia have gone through revamping with the same and ultimate objective to propel digitalisation in the continent, especially during the pandemic.

In the last quarter of 2020, some major role changes include the promotions of homegrown talents Nguyen Hong Viet as Managing Director (MD) of SAP Vietnam and Verena Siow as President and MD of SAP Southeast Asia. Last month, SAP APJ President Scott Russell has been promoted as Customer Success lead replacing Adaire Fox-Martin and as a new member of the Executive Board. SAP veteran Paul Marriott took over Russell’s role as SAP APJ President to further propel the software giant’s remarkable growth in the region.

This March, SAP Indochina welcomes its new MD Atul Tuli, former Vice President and Head of Customer Experience of SAP South East Asia. As MD of Indochina, he is responsible for the overall performance of Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Bhutan, Maldives, and Nepal.

Siow, who was the Managing Director of SAP Indochina before becoming SAP SeA President, shared her confidence in Tuli taking on the MD role emphasising the critical role of SAP Indochina in the SAP SeA’s growth strategy. Siow is responsible for leading the digital growth in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam markets as well as other emerging ASEAN countries. She said:

“We remain focused and committed to supporting our customers with technology solutions that can elevate their business for the long term. I am confident that Atul’s deep industry experience and understanding of the diverse Indochina region will be a key driver in accelerating our customers’ business transformation and contributing to their success.”

Driving the Intelligent Enterprise with SAP

Tuli brings with him over two decades of experience in enterprise software with expertise on cloud applications in the area of Customer Experience (CX). He held various sales leadership roles in Salesforce, Oracle, and Microsoft before joining SAP in 2019 as Vice President and Head of Customer Experience, SAP South East Asia. In the past two years and amidst the extraordinarily challenging 2020, he has led SAP customer adoption and success of many organisations in the region.

Expressing optimism in his new role in SAP Indochina, Bangkok-based Tuli shared:

“The Indochina region presents economic growth opportunities.”

“In Thailand, the government launched the Thailand 4.0 initiative as part of their push into the digital economy and grow industries of the future. We are also seeing an uptake of digital transformation in industries such as Telco, Public Sector, Utilities, and Manufacturing. I am thrilled to help our customers and partners thrive and succeed in the digital economy,” he added.

Thailand 4.0 is an economic model designed to propel the country’s recovery and development from the economic challenges of past economic development models that focused on agriculture (Thailand 1.0), light industry (Thailand 2.0), and advanced industry (Thailand 3.0). Thailand’s economy is projected to rebound to 4.0 percent in 2021 according to The World Bank. In sync with the fourth industrial revolution, the country’s IoT is forecasted to reach THB 65.74 billion by 2030 with consumer, manufacturing, transportation, and logistics industries driving growth.

SAP and Microsoft partnership has been harnessed back in 2017 when the tech giants’ CEOs Bill McDermott (former SAP CEO) and Satya Nadella announced the further integration of their cloud offerings with SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud to be offered on Microsoft Azure, allowing customers to run the suite in a secure, managed cloud.

After entering an extensive three-year deal to accelerate customer adoption of SAP S/4HANA and SAP Cloud Platform on Microsoft Azure late last year, SAP and Microsoft partnership will inevitably be felt globally. Just recently, SAP Thailand and Microsoft Thailand have partnered to deliver superior SAP ecosystem experience on Microsoft Azure.

To help SAP customers innovate faster with agile infrastructure to support dynamic business despite the global pandemic, SAP and Microsoft leverage the Microsoft Azure cloud platform to facilitate customers’ smoother transition to SAP S/4HANA. Customers would be able to quicken their digital transformation and run the business accordingly in the New Normal with first-class tools and platforms that support effective and efficient management of business assets and operations.

Verena Siow, Managing Director of SAP Indochina, said:

“Our work with Microsoft makes the migration journey to S/4HANA much easier with a more agile deployment process that fully leverage the capabilities of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. We are very excited to deliver an even better experience for customers in Thailand through strategic and partnership network alignments with Microsoft, ultimately giving customers simpler and more convenient ways to order, deploy, maintain, and learn to master SAP solutions on Azure.”

Project “Embrace” on Microsoft Azure

Project “Embrace”, a joint global initiative to simplify and modernise the customers’ journey to the cloud, carries over in Thailand. SAP and Microsoft’s extensive go-to-market partnership in the country covers every stage of a customer’s transition to the cloud, from conceptualization to sales. Consequently, it will accelerate the adoption and innovation of joint innovations from the tech giants and at the same time bring optimal business results to customers.

Through project “Embrace”, SAP and Microsoft, with a global network of system integrators, offer holistic bundles with unified reference architectures, road maps and market-approved journeys for customer’s seamless transition to the cloud. To ensure smoother migration of SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA customers from on-premises to the public cloud, Microsoft will re-sell components of SAP Cloud Platform together with Azure.

The collaboration is also anticipated to work on future deployment and migration of existing direct SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud customers leveraging hyperscaler infrastructure. However, SAP continues with its longstanding policy of supporting choice for those customers who request alternatives based on business requirements.

In essence, project “Embrace” provides customers with:

  • A simplified move from on-premise editions of SAP ERP to SAP S/4HANA for customers with integrated product and industry solutions through industry market bundles.
  • Collaborative support model for simplified resolution through a combined support model for Azure and SAP Cloud Platform
  • Jointly developed market journeys to support customer needs with the help of SAP and Microsoft system integrator partners.

SAP on Azure Kickstarter Program

In the same vein, SAP on Azure Kickstarter Program taps new customers looking to explore an SAP implementation on Azure to enter a pilot deployment phase at zero cost.

Dhanawat Suthumpun, Managing Director, Microsoft Thailand stated:

“SAP and Microsoft’s partnership has brought together our capabilities at all levels – from the senior leadership to engineering experts and support teams – to take the SAP experience to the next level on Azure.”

“Through the Kickstarter Program, we are offering businesses a chance to experience the class-leading performance and capabilities of SAP solutions together with powerful, dynamic infrastructure on Azure in a trial phase with no initial investment, allowing them to discover new ways to operate at optimal efficiency with the flexibility to handle everything from major downtimes to peak demand,” Suthumpun added.

Mike Chan, General Manager for Cloud and Enterprise, Microsoft Asia Pacific, shared:

“With joint support and dedicated engineering capabilities from SAP and Microsoft, we are able to offer the best SAP experience on Azure with simpler ways to try and acquire new solutions, faster and more convenient deployment, and less turnaround time for support requests.”

“We are also able to provide blueprints that make it easier to achieve an optimal deployment of SAP apps on Azure with reference architecture specifically for each industry – such as finance, oil, and gas, retail, or healthcare – and full compliance with industrial and regulatory standards in these fields,” he detailed.
