SAP.iO Foundries in Tokyo and Shanghai have recently launched new startup programs aimed at promoting innovation and collaboration between startups, SAP customers, and partners.

Focused on accelerating and expanding startup innovation as well as incubating employee initiatives, SAP’s strategic business unit SAP.iO aims to bring new collaborations and products to the German enterprise software giant. By working with startups, SAP.iO Foundries are able to access new technologies and ideas that can be integrated into existing products or used to create entirely new solutions. This focus on innovation ensures that SAP stays ahead of the curve and remains at the forefront of the tech industry.

This month, SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo — with its emphasis on Business to Business (B2B) Enterprise Software as a service (SaaS) — welcomed the first cohort of participants for its “B2B Enterprise SaaS” startup program. In total, four startups operating in a broad range of markets and industries have been chosen to participate in the program. The initiative’s goal is to deliver innovative solutions to SAP’s local and international customers through seamless integration with SAP’s portfolio-wide offerings.

For the benefit of SAP customers, the goal of the equity-free initiative is to speed up innovation and promote the development of novel business models. Additionally, the 13-week digital program provides startups with personalized mentorship, access to SAP’s technologies and application programming interfaces (APIs), and the chance to work with SAP’s existing client base.

Commenting on the latest startup program, Hirofumi Suzuki, President and Representative Director, at SAP Japan, shared in a statement:

“SAP has been shifting to a cloud-centric strategy and collaborating with a variety of cloud-native external startups enables us more to provide our customers with even more flexible, extendable, and innovative products in the cloud. At the same time, it helps them to realize their digital transformation. This program will encourage our customers to utilize a variety of new solutions or technologies with SAP systems brought by cutting-edged startups.”

The following companies are part of the “B2B Enterprise SaaS” cohort:

  • A1A, a cloud-based manufacturing and procurement systems provider, offers SaaS solutions for direct material ordering in manufacturing units, with a focus on analyzing quotation data to find opportunities for cost savings.
  • OPRO, a startup that provides cloud report services, helps businesses digitize their paperwork by providing them with customizable online forms in the cloud.
  • SmartShopping aims to make it easy for customers to automate inventory and order management, in addition to optimizing stock and streamlining the supply chain with Internet of Things (IoT).
  • Techtouch provides a SaaS-based digital adoption platform in the cloud that facilitates the use of technological tools by the company’s clientele.

In 2020, the first accelerator program at SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo was also geared towards B2B technology for consumer products. The selected businesses are all in their early stages of development and work in the retail, consumer products, and distribution sectors.

Promoting Innovation with SAP.iO Foundries

At the SAP.iO Foundry Shanghai, SAP also just introduced a new startup program aimed at developing consumer and retail technology that will positively impact the future of retail. Technological and digital transformation have been expedited by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and its effects can now be seen in every aspect of society. Massive shifts in consumer behavior have opened up new avenues for commerce in the consumer goods and retail sectors.

Seven businesses were chosen to participate in the program and form collaborations with the German tech giant by a jury consisting of SAP specialists, other partners, venture capital firms, government innovation agencies, and SAP clients like Shui On Land. Sharing her thoughts about the new startup initiative, Sophie Zhang, General Manager of SAP Customer Experience (CX) at SAP Greater China, remarked:

“I am very happy that the new SAP.iO cohort can work with CX. We are always looking for innovative solution partners to expand our portfolio and deliver local SaaS solutions to CX customers.”

In order to better serve worldwide customers in consumer, catering, retail, hospitality, fashion, and other industries, SAP.iO Foundry Shanghai has established the “Future of Shopping” cohort to attract retail and consumer SaaS firms. Meng Xu, Vice President of Strategic Industry Consulting at SAP China, commented:

“The consumer, retail and fashion industries are the top priorities of China’s strategic industry group, accounting for 40% of our revenue. We pay great attention to the ecosystem of these industries. The seven startups we recruited this time can well meet the different requests of local customers.”

These are the startups that are taking part in the “Future of Shopping” cohort:

  • XForcePlus’s supply chain information collaboration services and VAT invoice management solutions are available to businesses of all sizes.
  • With Freemud’s help, chain brand stores may quickly turn into “smart stores” and meet the difficulties of the digital era.
  • Large consumer-facing brands can make use of Reabam’s scalable and configurable SaaS services for their chain brand businesses.
  • Zjian provides businesses with in-house designed tools and shopping assistants to re-engage current members and enhance the purchasing experience for new ones.
  • For businesses both at home and abroad, Shenyan Intelligent provides comprehensive data center and business center solutions.
  • Qiyuesuo is a SaaS platform that allows users to digitally sign documents and save certificates.
  • Apexdata’s services support clients in conducting insightful credit analyses and increasing the value of their credit profiles.

Integrated business automation platform SENSYN CORE, which was developed by Tokyo-based startup SENSYN ROBOTICS, is the first SAP Industry Cloud Partner solution from Japan.

By leveraging the potential of robotics, SENSYN ROBOTICS intends to advance aspects of society that are currently seen as “commonplace.” Since its founding in October 2015, the Japanese company has made great strides toward accomplishing this goal by utilizing the capabilities of robotics to fully automate previously labor-intensive tasks, such as facility checks, disaster mitigation, as well as security and monitoring.

As an SAP Partner, SENSYN ROBOTICS was one of the companies chosen to participate in the startup accelerator program, SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo, in 2021. This served as the impetus for a partnership with the German enterprise software giant to develop SENSYN CORE, a solution that helps maintain the processes of power stations operated by organizations in the oil, chemical, materials, gas, and power industries. The solution integrates SAP’s facility maintenance solution, and the SAP Asset Intelligence Network, which is powered by the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

SAP Asset Intelligence Network uses the SENSYN CORE solution to recover stored construction and operational data, and choose the locations to be thoroughly checked, and connect those details to the platform. At which point SENSYN CORE leverages the insights to create drone flight paths that enable the drone to autonomously begin the evaluation and gather data like photographs of the plant facilities.

Acknowledging that the industry cloud initiative relies heavily on the contributions of SAP partners, SAP Global Senior Vice President and Head of Cloud Industry Program Kai Finck, said in a statement:

“With open APIs, process and data models, as well as a wealth of cloud native technologies to innovate at the vertical edge, SAP’s industry cloud is attracting partners like SENSYN ROBOTICS, who are looking to create “next business practices” for enterprises and business networks that will help accelerate the pace at which customers can address shifting business demands.”

Developing a Solution for SAP Industry Cloud Offerings

Industry cloud solutions built by SAP and its partners on an open platform offer enterprises an easy access point to new vertical solutions across a wide range of sectors, including the automotive, telecommunications, and energy industries. Businesses are able to begin the process of cost-effective business transformation and sustainable growth while managing disruptions and changes in the industry if they have solutions that are designed to be interoperable with the intelligent suite offered by SAP.

SENSYN ROBOTICS Chief Executive Officer Takuya Kitamura stated that new technologies provide an opportunity for utilities and energy providers to become safer and more efficient in their operations. He further said:

“We aim to enable reliable inspections of plant facilities through the use of digital platforms and robotics, leveraging big data and analytics to recognize and address anomalies faster, ultimately driving greater reliability and boosting productivity.”

Using acquired data, the SENSYN CORE solution is able to identify anomalies or warning signs and provides contextual commentary relevant to the observed issue. Additionally, SAP’s asset management system is linked to the findings, and the appropriate people are notified so they may take the next steps.

Moreover, the solution’s advantages for sustainability and environmental health and safety come from its potential to expand the usage of automated maintenance in place of manned support, hence decreasing the number of site visits and minimizing the potential for human error.

Congratulating all of the people involved in the collaboration, SAP Asia Pacific Japan (SAP APJ) President Paul Marriott shared in a LinkedIn post:

“For 50 years, innovation has been at the heart of our strategy and our customers’ success. And when our ecosystem of partners co-innovate with us, our impact is significantly amplified. SAP partners are a critical component of our industry cloud initiative. Together we are creating innovative solutions that help prepare our customers for shifting market and business demands.”

As a member of the SAP global startup program SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo, SAP Japan has recently decided to support six startups in line with the theme of “Sustainable Enterprise.”

As part of SAP.iO — which aims to accelerate and scale startup innovation while also fostering employee initiatives — new collaborations and products are developed for German enterprise software giant SAP. Organisations from every geographies, industries, and line of businesses come together at SAP.iO to improve the way businesses run their operations. As of 2017, the global startup support program of SAP has assisted more than 400 external startups and internal ventures in accelerating their growth, while also providing access to thousands of SAP customers to cutting-edge technologies.

Last November, six international tech firms were accepted into SAP.iO’s sustainability startup program where they could leverage next-generation technologies to help organisations in the Asia-Pacific and Japan region reach their goals of preserving socially responsible supply chains, combatting climate action, and transitioning to a circular economy.

In Japan, SAP.iO began in 2019 as a “practical” program that connects companies with the transformative needs of the Japanese industry while also encouraging co-creation with startups. To date, the initiative has completed five cohort programs, with a sixth on the way(InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

Hirofumi Suzuki, President and Representative Director at SAP Japan Co., Ltd., shared in a statement on LinkedIn:

“I am pleased to share with you that we selected six startups to participate in the first half of the FY 2022 cohort program of the SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo, SAP’s global startup support program in Japan.”

“For this year’s program, we were looking for B2B startup companies to work with SAP Japan under the theme of “Sustainable Enterprise”. Congratulations to the six companies that were successfully selected,” Suzuki further said.

Accelerating Innovation Through the SAP Global Startup Initiative

Astamuse Co., Ltd., Babel Co., Ltd., Eitoss Co., Ltd., Latona, Inc., Pirika Co., Ltd., and Sutainacraft, Inc. will officially participate in SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo. Mentors, who will primarily be product specialists and significant individuals from SAP’s sales teams, will provide guidance to the six companies. The cohort program, which will be conducted over the course of the next 13 weeks, will cover the topics listed below:

  • Sharing knowledge and experience to contribute to business-to-business (B2B) strategy
  • Integrating SAP products using APIs
  • Developing joint proposals to solve issues faced by SAP enterprise customers

Meanwhile, this week also saw last-mile delivery software company Milkman Technologies being chosen for SAP.iO’s startup program for resilient supply chains. The firm was selected by a panel involving SAP and Accenture professionals, as well as SAP partners and customers. Launched by SAP.iO Foundries in Munich and Tel Aviv, the initiative is primarily focused on building a resilient supply chain by harnessing partnerships with innovative startups that incorporate their advanced technologies with SAP product lines.

Furthermore, Milkman Technologies is the only organisation operating in the last mile category. For the duration of its participation in the program, the company intends to broaden the scope of the SAP Digital Supply Chain portfolio by offering improved order visibility and earlier shopper involvement. This is in addition to contributing to a better customer experience through automated governance of the last mile.

Thrilled to be announcing the news, Milkman Technologies Chief Executive Officer Antonio Perini, Milkman Technologies CEO, remarked:

“I am very excited for this opportunity to integrate the Milkman Home Delivery Platform with the SAP Digital Supply Chain portfolio. Thanks to SAP experts, partners, and customers for selecting our innovation in the last mile category for organisations with direct-to-consumer (D2C) operations.”

Sustainable Lab Inc., one of the select tech startups that participated in the SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo Fall 2021 program, is known for its industry leading non-financial database ESG and sustainability reporting tool TERRAST β.

Through the years, SAP has been both an enabler and an examplar for driving sustainability goals within the company– embedding sustainability measures in its operational activities and outside the organisation by designing products and services that adhere to selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Since aligning with the 17 Global Goals in 2015, the software giant has been keen on the economic, environmental, and social impacts of its technologies and applications used by its customers. A thought leader in integrated reporting and holistic management, SAP has also set clear goals for its material non-financial indicators.

In Japan, SAP has recently partnered with one of its SAP.iO accelerator programme participants Sustainable Lab Inc., an AI group that creates a database of corporate environmental and social contributions. SAP Japan and the Japanese pioneer in data science for sustainability are joining forces to develop a service to support the realisation of “true corporate value”, in which non-financial values such as ESG (environmental, social, and governance) and SDGs are given much emphasis.

“We will support and accelerate more comprehensive and accurate ESG investment decisions for institutional investors and more data-driven SDGs management for corporate clients, raising the level of sustainability in society,” the fintech start-up stated.

Advancing ESG, Sustainability Reporting

Sustainable Lab offers ESG/ SDGs non-financial big data platform TERRAST β, a data infrastructure that provides a convincing solution for promoting ESG/ SDGs of companies by using original data design, data extraction technology, and analysis by machine learning. The joint partnership intends to integrate TERRAST β with several SAP sustainability solutions including SAP Sustainability Control Tower, SAP Product Footprint Management, SAP Responsible Design, and Production to deliver a comprehensive data analysis.

The collaborative partnership between SAP Japan and Sustainable Lab aims to bring the following benefits to SAP customers:

  • Focus on improving management and assessment of non-financial values including corporate value enhancement and ESG/SDGs initiatives
  • Provide more extensive data and multiple scenarios
  • Empower customers to makers thorough, accurate ESG investment decisions and enhance SDGs management leveraging data
  • Significantly contribute to achieving sustainability in society and encourage sustainability transformation

Eyeing the ESG Software Market

SAP CEO Christian Klein has recently shared in an interview that the company is exploring to expand its solutions portfolio, banking on its sustainability competencies in supply chain and procurement, to support enterprises’ ESG goals. He stressed SAP’s sustainability and ESG reporting tools give the German software enterprise an absolute advantage over competitors Salesforce.com Inc. and ServiceNow Inc. in the burgeoning ESG reporting market forecasted to reach $2 billion by 2030.

“You can only act on something when you have the transparency. We are using our existing solutions and we are expanding the data model to make ESG transparent,” he said.

“Software for salespeople, where is the carbon footprint? And what kind of carbon footprint do you create when you are doing pipeline management? You need the data. And the data sits in SAP systems,” Klein highlighted.

The SAP Chief also explained that the standard for ESG reporting will be defined in a system that operates the most exhaustive processes such as supply chain, manufacturing, travel, and expense. He stressed that these areas are where SAP has the right to establish standards.

Five tech startups in Japan were selected to join the second cohort of SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo in 2021 to further the development of their data and analytics solutions.

The 10 SAP.iO Foundries, strategically located in key cities around the world, deliver accelerator programs that are tailored to their local markets and primarily work with regional sales teams and customers. SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo, located in SAP’s Experience Center in Ōtemachi, started in 2019 as a practical accelerator program to support the digital transformation of organisations in Japan– championing co-innovation with tech startups. Since its operation, it has already completed four cohort programs that covered various themes such as B2B technologies for consumer products in October 2020 and digital supply chain and customer experience solutions in April 2021.

For this year’s second cohort program themed “data & analytics”, SAP Japan Co., Ltd. started the qualification and recruitment process in June and has selected five startups to participate in the SAP accelerator program. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.) From October 4, 2021, the chosen companies will embark on a 13-week program that allows them to leverage SAP’s go-to-market and technical support to build a successful and enduring partnership with the German software enterprise.

Five Select Tech Startups in Japan

SAP.iO is an open innovation model and a zero-equity-ask program that enables visionary startups to use the power of SAP data, application programming interfaces (APIs), platform technologies, and new business models. To be part of the program, the selected startups had to fulfill certain conditions, which include having a clear product-market fit for an enterprise software solution developed in-house, existing enterprise customers, and sales and marketing resources to support the partnership with SAP.

Here are the five startups for the SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo Fall 2021 program:

EAGLYS Co., Ltd. Headquartered in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, EAGLYS specialises in secure data utilisation and AI analysis, accumulating a track record of social implementation with major companies worldwide. The company develops and provides software that can securely perform data linkage, search between businesses, and AI analysis on the cloud by utilising secret calculation software Data Armor series.

Sustainable Lab Co., Ltd. The company is an AI group that creates a database of corporate environmental and social contributions. It offers ESG/ SDGs non-financial big data platform ESG Terrace, a data infrastructure that provides a convincing solution for promoting SDGs / ESG of companies by using original data design, data extraction technology, and analysis by machine learning.

Synspective Inc. The Japanese startup provides solutions based on satellite data analysis and develops and operates small SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites. Synspective aims to provide solutions using SAR satellite data to help solve social issues that have been arising in recent years. The company intends to build a constellation of 6 satellites by 2023.

Trade Waltz Co., Ltd. The tech company provides a trade platform service developed by industry-government-academia ALL JAPAN using NTT DATA’s blockchain technology. TradeWaltz® enables comprehensive information sharing among trade-related players, and provides users with a new value that goes beyond the digitisation of trade documents.

Zeroboard Co., Ltd. The startup develops solutions that involve companies, local governments, and consumers so that society can become a “dashboard” for achieving zero CO2 emissions. The company offers zeroboard, a cloud service that streamlines the calculation of corporate CO2 emissions, reduction management, and response to various reports and market disclosure systems.

The culmination of the program will be during the SAP.iO Cohort Demo Day in January 2022.

SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo, SAP’s B2B accelerator program, recently selected robotics and AI technology companies that focus on customer experience and supply chain transformation.

Many organisations today are gradually recovering from the pandemic shake-up. SAP has been enabling enterprises through intelligent solutions to mitigate disruptions in their supply chain, operations, and overall performance. Through SAP.iO Foundries, SAP’s global network of top-tier startup programs, the software giant is able to identify and support new companies that offer innovative solutions to help businesses run better even during these unprecedented times.

At SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo, the recent focus is on supporting B2B startup companies that offer solutions to accelerate customer experience (CX) and digital supply chain transformation. Last year, more than ever, the supply chain has experienced debilitating challenges that greatly affected the global exchange of goods and services, and, consequently, customer experiences.

SAP Japan President and Representative Director Hirofumi Suzuki said:

“At SAP, we enable our customers to become intelligent enterprises by integrating data and processes, building flexible value chains, and innovating with industry best practices.

The goal is for them to grow more resilient, more profitable, and more sustainable, particularly in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic. This program will enable our customers to realise digital transformations with new technologies brought by cutting-edge startups.”

Backing Robotics and AI Technology Companies

In October 2020, SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo featured consumer-products-focused B2B technologies. This year, the Foundry selected five early-stage startups that offer digital supply chain and customer experience B2B technologies to join the open innovation model and zero-equity-ask program.

Below is the cohort for the first half of 2021 with the theme of “Intelligent Enterprise”:

Adacotech has developed a solution that offers anomaly detection AI software to the manufacturing industry. The Tokyo-based startup created an original AI technology that operates with four types of inputs– image, video, sound, and sensors– for the detection of abnormalities. Some notable clients of Adacotech include DENSO Corporation, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and Toyota Motor Corporation.

Evolany is the creator of Anybot, a development-free mini-application construction platform. It is an omnichannel for automatic customer service that integrates LINE, Messenger, telephone, and email to help businesses engage directly with their customers.

LINKWIZ enables manufacturing companies to automate and digitalise inspections with its intelligent robot system software. L-Qualify is a 3D robot inspection system for in-line that replaces visual inspection and enables high-precision 100{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} inspection. LINKWIZ’s other product is L-Robot, a robot control system with automatic teaching data generation/ correction function.

Sensyn Robotics is a Japanese startup focused on the development, application, and deployment of industrial drone services. The company tackles pressing social challenges by leveraging industrial drones and robots with automation software to enable inspection, disaster countermeasures, security, and surveillance for enterprises and municipalities. Last January, Sensyn Robotics unveiled “Sensyn Explorer,” a small drone about the size of the palm of one’s hand, designed to operate within tight indoor spaces.

SORA provides an AI-powered pricing platform to help hotels and their customers find optimal prices.

The Japanese startups will undergo a 13-week virtual program wherein they get access to curated mentorship, SAP data, technology, and application programming interfaces (APIs). They are also given the opportunity to collaborate with SAP customers during the program.
