SAP, a global leader in enterprise software, announced its Q1 2024 results on April 22, revealing impressive cloud momentum across all markets, particularly in Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ). The company reported significant customer wins and successful implementations, demonstrating the growing demand for cloud-based digital transformation solutions in the region. SAP’s cloud revenue in APJ reached €524 million, marking a 35% increase at constant currencies compared to the same period in 2023.

SAP’s Q1 2024 results showcase the trust that globally recognized businesses in APJ have placed in the company’s cloud offerings. Industry giants such as Fujitsu Limited, SK E&S, and LTIMindtree have chosen SAP to drive their digital transformation initiatives. RISE with SAP, the company’s flagship offering for holistic business transformation, has been particularly successful in the region, with new wins and go-lives at companies like SinarMas, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Havells India, and PharmaGendGlobal Medical Services.

SAP Q1 Results Showcase Strong Cloud Momentum

Paul Marriott, President of SAP APJ, emphasized the significance of these wins, stating that businesses of all sizes and across various sectors in APJ recognize SAP as a trusted partner for their cloud transformation and innovation initiatives, including in high-growth areas such as Business AI and sustainability.

SAP has been a leading provider of enterprise software for decades, helping businesses streamline their operations, optimize their supply chains, and make data-driven decisions. SAP in Asia Pacific Japan is leading the digital transformation wave, setting a new benchmark in cloud and AI innovations across the region.

The global leader in enterprise software has marked a year of substantial cloud momentum, as evidenced by its Q4 and full year 2023 results announced on January 24. The Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region has emerged as a focal point for SAP’s growth, with numerous enterprises across diverse industries choosing SAP for their cloud transformations. This surge in demand is not only a testament to SAP’s robust cloud offerings but also highlights the region’s growing embrace of digital solutions.

A Transformative Era with the Rise of Cloud and AI

The fourth quarter of 2023 saw SAP’s cloud revenue in APJ soar by 28% to €499 million, indicating a robust and growing appetite for cloud-based solutions in the region. This growth is attributed to the increasing recognition among APJ businesses of the need for agility and innovation in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. SAP’s cloud solutions are enabling companies to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and foster innovation.

Under the leadership of Paul Marriott, President of SAP APJ, the company is not just focusing on cloud transformations but is also pioneering in areas like artificial intelligence and sustainability. These technologies are becoming crucial for businesses looking to stay competitive and responsible in the modern economy. SAP’s commitment to integrating AI into its offerings allows businesses to leverage data-driven insights, while its sustainability solutions help companies reduce their environmental impact.

The Strategy of SAP in Asia Pacific Japan

SAP’s strategy in APJ, as guided by Marriott, revolves around a customer-centric approach. This approach is evident in the diverse array of businesses that have recently partnered with SAP. For instance, Airservices Australia, responsible for a significant portion of the world’s airspace, has transitioned to SAP S/4HANA in the cloud. Similarly, Christchurch City Council has embraced RISE with SAP for a private cloud solution, demonstrating the flexibility of SAP’s offerings in meeting varied customer needs.

In Japan, leading firms like NEC Corporation and Daikin Industries have chosen RISE with SAP, signaling a shift towards more integrated and efficient cloud-based systems. This trend is also consistent across the APJ region, with companies like Matsumoto Precision Co. Ltd. adopting SAP’s solutions for enhancing their environmental sustainability practices.

Transforming Industries Across APJ

The implementation of SAP’s solutions has had a transformative impact on various industries across APJ. In Indonesia, PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk, a major chemical and infrastructure company, is leveraging SAP to support its growth and improve decision-making processes. Coles Group in Australia has also embraced SAP for its business transformation. These examples further demonstrate SAP’s ability to cater to diverse industry needs, from retail to manufacturing and beyond.

SAP’s suite of solutions, including SAP Signavio and SAP Datasphere, has been instrumental in enhancing process and data management for companies in the region. For instance, AusNet and Foodstuffs North Island have also integrated these solutions to streamline their operations and lay a foundation for future growth.

The integration of AI into SAP’s cloud offerings is enabling businesses in APJ to gain a competitive edge. AI-driven analytics and insights are empowering companies to make more informed decisions, optimize operations, and innovate in their respective fields.

This change was made to recognize those who strive for sustainable development through innovation, rather than simply striving for innovation itself.

Japan Society Category

Japan Industry 4.0 Category

Winner: Hitachi High-Tech Co., Ltd.

With SAP S/4HANA Cloud and the SAP Business Technology Platform, they built a DX platform to streamline and digitally transform the business’s end-to-end operations, from marketing and sales to product development and supply chain management. In conjunction with SAP Labs, the company will be marketing it.

SAP Concur Division

Winner: Nitori Holdings Co., Ltd.

In order to achieve the company’s medium- to the long-term objective of “3,000 shops and 3 trillion yen in sales in 2032,” they have selected SAP Concur as an expenditure operation platform that can be used at domestic and international group organizations. They optimized the change by unifying and streamlining internal procedures; for example, they reduced 2,800 different daily wage patterns to just 19. Finished a task that would have taken one person a lot of time.

Cloud Adoption Category

Winner: NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS CO., LTD.

In order to implement the “Nippon Express Group Management Plan 2023,” the Accounting Department has been promoting Project ITS as a foundational policy of F2S. (Fit to Standard). Experience Management (XM) Division

Winner: Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation

They have developed a cycle that encourages actions by feeding back on follow-ups, offering assistance with career design, and implementing steps to better the workplace and its employees based on the data they collect about expectations and other such things.

Mid-Market Division

Winner: Bitkey Co., Ltd.

Establishing business processes at an early stage, avoiding the occurrence of inefficient business processes, and considering the realization of real-time data-driven management through standardization are all crucial to the future growth and expansion of the firm. By optimizing and aligning company operations with global standards, they want to lay the groundwork for future development and expansion. Also, if you follow the Fit to Standard approach, you may start using internal resources right away (Self Implementation), which will be a great paradigm for introducing DX to many SMBs in the future.

Transformation Division

Winner: Lion Corporation

Lion Corporation’s award was based on the success of its efforts to modernize its planning system and core system, creating a streamlined process and system for carrying out both. They formed the “BPR Promotion Department” as the overseeing department, reframed the project’s goal as business reform rather than a simple technology introduction, and moved on with the system rollout while simultaneously reworking the business process.

Additionally, they set up a special department to handle one-number operations across all of their business units right around the time the system went live, and they’re actively encouraging the rollout and refinement of reforms like production planning and inventory optimization across the board in tandem with their partners.

By migrating SAP on Google Cloud, Vingroup plans to enhance its IT capabilities and extend its cloud footprint — providing greater agility, scalability, continuity of service and cost savings.

SAP and Google Cloud have played a pivotal role in helping businesses in Southeast Asia (SEA) to embrace cutting-edge technologies and stay ahead of the curve. This has become increasingly important in today’s business environment, where companies must constantly adapt and evolve to survive. SAP’s partnership with Google Cloud is a first step towards making it easier for businesses of all sizes to use cloud-based collaboration without having to give up control over their IT workloads.

As of August this year, Google Cloud SEA Managing Director Ruma Balasubramanian said that Google Cloud has 400 SAP customers in the region. Singapore-based shipper Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Indonesian coffee chain Kopi Kenangan are just some of the customers that are successfully leveraging SAP software on Google Cloud. By doing so, they are able to take advantage of the cost savings, flexibility, and scalability that the cloud has to offer. Additionally, they are able to benefit from the deep integration between SAP and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), which provides them with a best-in-class experience and helps them improve their bottom line.

Another company that will move all of its SAP workloads to Google Cloud’s open cloud environment is Vingroup and its subsidiaries. It is one of the largest private conglomerates in Vietnam with a diverse range of businesses, including retail, hospitality, healthcare, real estate, education, and more. The company has been a pioneer in the Vietnamese economy, and its move to Google Cloud is yet another example of its commitment to innovation and future growth.

Vingroup intends to employ best-in-class technologies to expand its production capacities, increase service and product quality, improve user experiences, and propel its worldwide expansion plan by modernizing and linking its core systems and data on an organization-wide basis. The transformation project will include the company’s manufacturing operations, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, human capital management (HCM), supply chain management (SCM), and finance management.

Le Thi Thu Thuy, Vice Chairwoman of Vingroup and Global CEO of VinFast, stated that Vingroup’s goal is to improve people’s lives generally and that the company sees technological advancement as the means to that end. Sharing more of her thoughts regarding the strategic partnership with Google Cloud, she added:

“With Google Cloud’s leading cloud infrastructure and unified data platform, we can analyze and understand customer needs, provide personalized products and services, and create compelling customer experiences. We also believe that this collaboration will bring greater security and efficiency to Vingroups business systems and applications globally.”

Leveraging SAP on Google Cloud

As part of the Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) signature cloud offering RISE with SAP, VinFast will operate SAP S/4HANA on Google Cloud in the United States and Germany, which will further expedite the company’s efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs) globally. In addition, the company expects to:

  • Gather and examine vast amounts of past and present data from its production plants and digital estate for electric vehicle sales and aftercare once it has completed the process of linking its SAP software to the database systems that it has already set in place with Google Cloud.
  • Enable VinFast in obtaining new insights, which will improve decision-making, promote increased automation, which will raise manufacturing output, and explore new strategies, including the application of Google Automotive Services (GAS), to support consumers across the entire vehicle ownership lifecycle.

Moreover, Vingroup companies operating in different markets, such as Vinpearl, VinHMS, Vinhomes, Vinschool, and Vinmec, amongst others, will utilize SAP solutions on GCP to manage their day-to-day company operations. Team members at Vinpearl and VinHMS, which delivers hotel booking and management software services, are now capable of creating hyper-personalized vacation experiences.

The hyper-personalized experiences will include targeted discounted rates on Google Travel, Google Hotel Search, and Google Maps — made possible by integrating and analyzing datasets related to products, customers, and supply chains across cloud-based SAP systems.

“Our collaboration with Vingroup is a great example of the next-generation, enterprise-ready capabilities and unique value that Google Cloud can bring to local enterprises, as they accelerate their digital transformation strategies, elevate Vietnam’s position in the global value chain, and contribute to its dynamic economy,” Balasubramanian remarked.

More and more Chinese SAP customers are signing up for the German tech giant’s portfolio of cloud solutions, particularly the Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) offering RISE with SAP.

RISE with SAP has been powering the company’s pivot to becoming a cloud company since its January 2021 launch, enabling organizations to transition their IT infrastructure to the cloud and scale transformation efforts according to their own terms and timelines. Over 650 customers have chosen SAP’s intelligent enterprise resource planning (ERP) system SAP S/4HANA during the second quarter of 2022. More than 60% of these organizations were new customers.

The latest financial results provide a strong indication that SAP is setting a new standard for business management and actively giving customers the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing marketplace. In Q2 2022, the signature cloud product was also selected by an increasing number of Chinese organizations to power their mission-critical business processes. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

According to SAP Chief Executive Officer and Executive Board Member Christian Klein, the performance of SAP during the second quarter demonstrates that the company’s solutions are fulfilling customer needs better than they ever have before. He went on to say that the transformation to the cloud is happening far more quickly than anticipated, and that cloud revenue has exceeded expectations and is now SAP’s primary source of revenue.

“We have a strong business opportunity, and with S/4HANA’s current cloud to-be-delivered business growth of 100%, SAP’s market share is steadily increasing,” Klein further shared.

Chinese SAP Customers Embark on a Digital Transformation Journey

Aside from international conglomerate Lei Shing Hong Limited and mobile lighting company Olight, we will also explore in this article some of the Chinese companies that have recently embarked on an intelligent enterprise journey leveraging the BTaaS signature cloud offering from the German software giant.

Hisense Group

Hisense is a popular Chinese company that specializes in home appliances, and manufactures color TVs and refrigerators. It also has nearly 30 factories at home and abroad through its recent acquisitions.

As a long-time customer of SAP, Hisense had been looking for a new way to streamline employee management in a cost-effective manner, so they decided to implement RISE with SAP. The low investment and ease of use made it an attractive choice for the company as they felt it would allow them to effectively integrate their human and financial management alongside property control. It will also support globally coordinated business activities and Research & Development (R&D) systems.

Zoomlion

After expanding technology and innovation for 30 years, Zoomlion has grown from the birthplace of China’s construction machinery technology to a global enterprise. With its overseas business always looking for innovation, Zoomlion’s overseas subsidiary chose RISE with SAP to be the foundation of their new software platform.

The company has a clear, ambitious plan to leverage the cloud and automate their standardized management practices in order to meet the company’s ambitious global expansion goals. In particular, they are looking to rapidly deploy standards across the entire enterprise, provide support for overseas branches, and finally, meet local regulatory requirements quickly so that they can operate as efficiently as possible.

Shandong Jingbo Holding Development Co., Ltd.

As one of the leading private refining and chemical companies in the Shandong province, Shandong Jingbo Holdings has decided to move its management to the cloud in order to support the group’s high-quality development strategy and meet regulatory needs in an era of “dual carbon”. To this end, it has chosen to use RISE with SAP as its enterprise cloud solution.

By focusing on the ERP cloud-based full coverage, optimizing the process and internal control, and financial standardization, Shandong Jingbo Holdings hopes to improve the management level of the group and lay a digital foundation for its business expansion.

Choosing SAP Solutions to Become an Intelligent Enterprise

Demonstrating SAP’s success in the country, the following Chinese organizations have also partnered with the tech giant in the second quarter of 2022 to accelerate business process transformation and help them scale growth.

  • Biopharmaceutical company BeiGene was looking for a centralized solution to streamline procurement, contract management, and payments across the company’s offices around the world. The company chose SAP Ariba, hoping to quickly build a unified procurement management platform in the cloud and create an integrated solution from procurement, contract, to payment.
  • Battlely, one of the country’s most prestigious and celebrated luxury car dealership groups, has chosen to deploy SAP Intelligent Robotic Processing Automation (SAP iRPA) and SAP Cloud Application Services (SAP CAS) in order to save time on tasks such as data acquisition, information aggregation, and automation.
  • Chinese fast food brand Lao Niangjiu has renewed its contract for the SAP Commerce Cloud and expanded the database to consolidate the construction of the menu management center and order middle platform, thereby improving business management efficiency.
  • Battery manufacturer and exporter Leoch International has chosen to implement SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Process Automation, and RISE with SAP to provide a more comprehensive approach to enterprise operations by creating a full chain of cost, quotation, order, and production systems.
  • In the early days of their establishment, Haichen New Energy’s rapid growth in business necessitated a high-standard operating system, and so they selected SAP S/4HANA as their platform, as well as SAP Sales Cloud, SAP Service Cloud, and SAP BTP.
  • Aohai Technology chose RISE with SAP, SAP BTP, and other solutions from SAP to help them move to the cloud and allow for integrated management of their supply chain.

Panasonic Corporation and Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. have recently been announced as new RISE with SAP customers, joining the increasing SAP cloud client base in Japan. In order to improve the efficiency of their respective business processes, both companies have chosen the German IT giant’s Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) signature cloud offering.

Since its introduction, the BTaaS product RISE with SAP has assisted organisations from a wide range of industries around the world, spanning from sports to automobile and energy power providers, to name a few. As part of its capabilities to harness the power of cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP), the comprehensive offering also includes analytics, business process intelligence (BPI), and SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) functionalities, which enable customers to become sustainable, intelligent enterprises and attain meaningful business results.

Former SAP APJ President Scott Russell, who is now Head of Customer Success and Member of the Executive Board at SAP SE, previously predicted that Asia would be the leader in RISE with SAP adoption as companies in the region, such as those based in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India, and Vietnam, strengthen their business transformation strategies. In addition to attracting companies with smaller IT footprints or budgets, the solution’s design — which includes a single package of bundled products under one contract — continues to draw in organisations with mission-critical core systems that need to transition from their current on-premises legacy infrastructure.

This month, Osaka-headquartered multinational conglomerate company Panasonic Corporation and Kyoto-based global designer, manufacturer, and supplier of advanced electronic materials Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. have teamed up with SAP to further expedite their respective business process transformation journeys. SAP’s next-generation ERP system, SAP S/4HANA Cloud, will be the focus of both of the new cloud customer projects involving the implementation of RISE with SAP. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

New RISE with SAP Customers in Japan: Panasonic and Murata

Aiming to expedite the digital transformation (DX) of its entire value chain centered on global manufacturing and sales, Panasonic has selected RISE with SAP after initiating a strategic agreement with the German tech giant in support of its intelligent, sustainable enterprise vision. Furthermore, the project aims to transform Panasonic’s business models and processes, as well as employee experience strategies, all of which are directly connected to the growth of the group’s overall business.

Thrilled to be able to accelerate the company-wide digital transformation in partnership with SAP, Yuki Kusumi, President and Representative Director, Group CEO of Panasonic, shared in a statement:

“Panasonic will continue to increase the value provided to customers by promoting PX and DX for customer service. SAP is a management and business operation platform centered on the latest cloud-based ERP to realise PX’s strategy and vision, and is a very important solution for realising our strategy.”

Commenting on the new customer win, SAP Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Executive Board Christian Klein remarked:

“RISE with SAP helps our customers transform their business and move to the cloud. To accelerate Panasonic’s global transformation and lay the foundation for sustainable, industry-leading competitiveness. I am pleased to have been selected as a partner.”

Meanwhile, another Japanese enterprise Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. also embarked on an intelligent enterprise journey leveraging the BTaaS solution from SAP. In 2018, the company selected SAP S/4HANA as the foundation for its worldwide accounting and finance system, replacing its previous system. It was first implemented in Murata’s operations in Japan, and then spread across the globe, including Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and is now being utilised by 18 multinational organisations.

Murata Manufacturing saw the urgent need to shift its systems to the cloud in order to respond to the ever-evolving business environment and keep up with its rapid expansion by implementing the newest digital technologies and innovations in the market. In November last year,  the company determined that it will transition to the RISE with SAP cloud service, which is centered on SAP S/4HANA Cloud. By integrating RISE with SAP, Murata was able to make use of the most up-to-date technological capabilities offered by the German enterprise software giant.

Lei Shing Hong Limited and Olight have joined the list of customers that are accelerating their migration to the cloud with SAP solutions in China. Both enterprises have selected the German tech giant’s Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) offering RISE with SAP to support their respective cloud transformation journeys.

Introduced in January last year, RISE with SAP demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering flexible and scalable products and services that continuously meet the ever-evolving needs of customers and partners. Driving business transformation and innovation while harnessing the power of the cloud, the subscription-based offering continues to gain traction in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Recently, it has added Lei Shing Hong Limited, an international conglomerate, and Olight, a global lighting company, to its roster of Chinese customers.

In an interview with Caijing, a Beijing-based independent magazine, former SAP APJ President, now SAP Executive Board Member and Head of Customer Success Scott Russell said that SAP China performed well last Q3 2021 and that the Chinese market is a global accelerator for SAP. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.) Noting that there are two strong driving forces for cloud growth — the need for digital innovation and business transformation — Russell emphasised that SAP has the abilities to execute these.

“The more companies that go to the cloud, the lower the cost of developing new business models with cloud capabilities. We have seen that the former power companies are transforming into service-oriented enterprises, service-oriented enterprises have begun to produce goods, and financial institutions have expanded into new fields,” he explained.

Powering Lei Shing Hong’s Cloud Digital Transformation

Lei Shing Hong Limited, an international conglomerate that caters luxury car brand services to a distribution network that covers over 80 cities across the country, forged a strategic partnership with SAP to migrate its existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to the cloud. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.) SAP will help provide an integrated cloud transformation solution using RISE with SAP to support the infrastructure, network security, and system technology management services of Lei Shing Hong.

Furthermore, Lei Shing Hong Motors Executive Director Sun Zhongwei said that the company hopes to achieve the stability and sustainability of its business operations through strategic digital upgrades. He noted that all of its efforts are geared towards providing customers with improved services and experiences.

Meanwhile, SAP Global Vice President and SAP China Co-General Manager Li Xudong highlighted the company’s support for Lei Shing Hong’s business transformation in the cloud. He remarked:

“We are very pleased to deepen cooperation between the two parties and use SAP’s one-stop solution of ‘going to the cloud’ to provide excellent exclusive services to help them fully migrate to the cloud flexibly and quickly, creating a new model in the industry.”

Accelerating Olight’s Migration to the Cloud with SAP S/4HANA Cloud

Olight, a leading enterprise in China’s mobile lighting industry, has also selected RISE with SAP to assist in the development of an integrated cloud management platform and a new model for cross-border e-commerce. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.) According to the press release, the collaboration project leveraging SAP S/4HANA Cloud (Private Edition) and SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) will also help accelerate Olight’s globalisation and provide domestic and international customers with an enhanced user experience.

Expressing his delight at the new partnership, Olight Group Chief Financial Officer Wang Zhijian stated that they are “happy to cooperate with SAP” as the German multinational has a history of helping companies expand globally, develop transformation strategies, expedite cloud migration, and realise business transformation.

“With the help of SAP’s cloud technology, Olight will further enhance its global operation capabilities, and under the new opportunities of the times, burst out innovative thinking and business models. We look forward to the cooperation between the two parties to create a world-leading benchmark case,” he added.
