SAP China recently convened a landmark summit, illuminating the path forward for new Chinese enterprises navigating the cloud era. With an agenda steeped in the latest global practices and strategic implementations, the event brought together industry leaders to dissect, discuss and shape the digital transformation landscape in 2023 and beyond.

The SAP China Summit played host to an array of global business leaders and SAP partners, providing a platform for holistic, multi-dimensional dialogue on the facets of digital transformation. The event was designed with an intensive structure comprising themed forums on globalization, cloud advantage, and sustainable development. This was further enriched with transformation forums focusing on pivotal business areas such as human resources, finance, and supply chain and procurement.

These forums served as the beating heart of the summit, providing insights into the most pressing digital transformation topics of 2023. Each forum was an exploratory platform, tackling a range of issues from the practical application of AI in enterprise markets to the creation of personalized customer interactions.

A key highlight of the event was the firsthand experience SAP offered to the participants. SAP showcased its innovative utilization of AI technology in core business sectors, including finance, supply chain, and human resources.

This exhibition was not merely a display of SAP’s technical prowess; it was a demonstration of the company’s vision of AI as an integral part of the enterprise ecosystem. It underscored the immense potential of AI in revolutionizing traditional business operations and driving efficiency, reinforcing SAP’s dedication to leading the digital charge.

Voices from the Top: SAP Leadership Speaks

The perspectives of SAP’s top leaders added a layer of authenticity and vision to the proceedings. Chenhong Huang, Global Executive Vice President of SAP SE and President of SAP Greater China, spoke passionately about SAP’s long-standing relationship with Chinese enterprises. Huang further stated in a LinkedIn post:

“Over the past three decades, we have had the honor of supporting and growing with tens of thousands of customers in China. Looking ahead, we are eager to continue our journey of enabling these organizations to thrive in the future with the transformative power of SAP technology.”

Echoing these sentiments was Scott Russell, Executive Board Member, Customer Success at SAP. His comments amplified the optimism and excitement permeating the event. Russell made special mention of the positive reception to SAP’s latest business and technology showcases.

Sustainability was another central theme of the summit. Russell brought attention to the launch of the Zero Waste & Circular Economy campaign at SAP NOW Beijing, reiterating SAP’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future.

The emphasis on sustainability underscores the company’s understanding that the future of business is not just digital, but also green. It further highlighted SAP’s commitment to aligning its digital transformation objectives with sustainable goals.

DeepWay and SAP China: A Partnership for the Future

The summit was not only about discussions and showcases. It also marked the initiation of new strategic collaborations. SAP and DeepWay, a leading autonomous truck manufacturer backed by Baidu, announced a joint agreement.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of China’s new energy commercial vehicle market, this partnership signifies the role of digitalization in boosting competitive sustainability. DeepWay intends to utilize SAP’s extensive expertise in areas like enterprise resource planning, big data, and supply chain management to heighten its operational efficiency.

Looking forward, both SAP and DeepWay aim to concentrate their efforts on creating a fully integrated business ecosystem. The plan is to streamline everything from sales to payments, and from demand planning to procurement. Moreover, this comprehensive integration will not only support DeepWay’s production plan for their intelligent new energy heavy-duty truck, the DeepWay Xingchen, but it will also spur innovation in business models.

In wrapping up, the SAP China Summit 2023 was more than an event. It was also a beacon, guiding Chinese enterprises toward a future-proof existence, ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the digital age. SAP’s commitment to empowering these organizations was evident in each aspect of the summit, promising a future of digital prosperity.

SAP Wins Economic Observer’s “2022 China’s Most Respected Company” Award

The distinguished title of 2022 China’s Most Respected Company is an honor presented by the highly respected business media Economic Observer. This esteemed annual selection has been running for a remarkable 21 years and is widely recognized as one of the most influential recognitions within the Chinese business landscape.

This year’s selection process has evaluated nearly 100 companies based on a variety of criteria, including their potential for steady growth, commitment to social responsibility, and capacity for innovation. SAP is the only enterprise application software provider chosen to be included on the list, demonstrating its extensive industry leadership.

Dr. Huang also recently achieved the remarkable distinction of being named “2022 CEO of the Year for Outstanding MNCs in China”. Following his appointment as President of SAP Greater China in 2021, Dr. Huang has gone on to successfully steer SAP’s growth and development in the Chinese market by introducing fresh ideas and strategies that have reinvigorated its presence there.

Accelerating Digital Transformation for Chinese Customers

Under China’s new development pattern, SAP has identified the acceleration of digital transformation, the synergy of the industrial chain under the “dual cycle” structure, and the crucial objective of achieving a “dual carbon” balance as key trends influencing enterprise development. With these developments in mind, companies must strive to keep pace with changing technological advancements and find innovative solutions to drive progress toward their desired goals.

SAP is dedicated to revolutionizing how “new Chinese enterprises” operate in this cloud-driven era, providing them with a comprehensive suite of solutions for their digital transformation. The RISE with SAP offering, in particular, is an end-to-end solution that helps businesses manage their entire digital transformation journey, from the initial assessment and planning stages to implementation and ongoing support. The Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) solution also provides access to a wide range of best practices, tools, and resources to help customers succeed in the digital world.
Many Chinese customers have taken the first step towards digital transformation and are now leveraging SAP’s BTaaS cloud offering. Prominent among them are Hisense Group, Zoomlion, and Shandong Jingbo Holding Development Co., Ltd. All of these organizations have recognized that intelligent enterprise solutions can help them stay competitive in their respective markets by unlocking real-time insights from data analytics, streamlining business processes to increase efficiency, and utilizing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

SAP.iO Foundries in Tokyo and Shanghai have recently launched new startup programs aimed at promoting innovation and collaboration between startups, SAP customers, and partners.

Focused on accelerating and expanding startup innovation as well as incubating employee initiatives, SAP’s strategic business unit SAP.iO aims to bring new collaborations and products to the German enterprise software giant. By working with startups, SAP.iO Foundries are able to access new technologies and ideas that can be integrated into existing products or used to create entirely new solutions. This focus on innovation ensures that SAP stays ahead of the curve and remains at the forefront of the tech industry.

This month, SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo — with its emphasis on Business to Business (B2B) Enterprise Software as a service (SaaS) — welcomed the first cohort of participants for its “B2B Enterprise SaaS” startup program. In total, four startups operating in a broad range of markets and industries have been chosen to participate in the program. The initiative’s goal is to deliver innovative solutions to SAP’s local and international customers through seamless integration with SAP’s portfolio-wide offerings.

For the benefit of SAP customers, the goal of the equity-free initiative is to speed up innovation and promote the development of novel business models. Additionally, the 13-week digital program provides startups with personalized mentorship, access to SAP’s technologies and application programming interfaces (APIs), and the chance to work with SAP’s existing client base.

Commenting on the latest startup program, Hirofumi Suzuki, President and Representative Director, at SAP Japan, shared in a statement:

“SAP has been shifting to a cloud-centric strategy and collaborating with a variety of cloud-native external startups enables us more to provide our customers with even more flexible, extendable, and innovative products in the cloud. At the same time, it helps them to realize their digital transformation. This program will encourage our customers to utilize a variety of new solutions or technologies with SAP systems brought by cutting-edged startups.”

The following companies are part of the “B2B Enterprise SaaS” cohort:

  • A1A, a cloud-based manufacturing and procurement systems provider, offers SaaS solutions for direct material ordering in manufacturing units, with a focus on analyzing quotation data to find opportunities for cost savings.
  • OPRO, a startup that provides cloud report services, helps businesses digitize their paperwork by providing them with customizable online forms in the cloud.
  • SmartShopping aims to make it easy for customers to automate inventory and order management, in addition to optimizing stock and streamlining the supply chain with Internet of Things (IoT).
  • Techtouch provides a SaaS-based digital adoption platform in the cloud that facilitates the use of technological tools by the company’s clientele.

In 2020, the first accelerator program at SAP.iO Foundry Tokyo was also geared towards B2B technology for consumer products. The selected businesses are all in their early stages of development and work in the retail, consumer products, and distribution sectors.

Promoting Innovation with SAP.iO Foundries

At the SAP.iO Foundry Shanghai, SAP also just introduced a new startup program aimed at developing consumer and retail technology that will positively impact the future of retail. Technological and digital transformation have been expedited by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and its effects can now be seen in every aspect of society. Massive shifts in consumer behavior have opened up new avenues for commerce in the consumer goods and retail sectors.

Seven businesses were chosen to participate in the program and form collaborations with the German tech giant by a jury consisting of SAP specialists, other partners, venture capital firms, government innovation agencies, and SAP clients like Shui On Land. Sharing her thoughts about the new startup initiative, Sophie Zhang, General Manager of SAP Customer Experience (CX) at SAP Greater China, remarked:

“I am very happy that the new SAP.iO cohort can work with CX. We are always looking for innovative solution partners to expand our portfolio and deliver local SaaS solutions to CX customers.”

In order to better serve worldwide customers in consumer, catering, retail, hospitality, fashion, and other industries, SAP.iO Foundry Shanghai has established the “Future of Shopping” cohort to attract retail and consumer SaaS firms. Meng Xu, Vice President of Strategic Industry Consulting at SAP China, commented:

“The consumer, retail and fashion industries are the top priorities of China’s strategic industry group, accounting for 40% of our revenue. We pay great attention to the ecosystem of these industries. The seven startups we recruited this time can well meet the different requests of local customers.”

These are the startups that are taking part in the “Future of Shopping” cohort:

  • XForcePlus’s supply chain information collaboration services and VAT invoice management solutions are available to businesses of all sizes.
  • With Freemud’s help, chain brand stores may quickly turn into “smart stores” and meet the difficulties of the digital era.
  • Large consumer-facing brands can make use of Reabam’s scalable and configurable SaaS services for their chain brand businesses.
  • Zjian provides businesses with in-house designed tools and shopping assistants to re-engage current members and enhance the purchasing experience for new ones.
  • For businesses both at home and abroad, Shenyan Intelligent provides comprehensive data center and business center solutions.
  • Qiyuesuo is a SaaS platform that allows users to digitally sign documents and save certificates.
  • Apexdata’s services support clients in conducting insightful credit analyses and increasing the value of their credit profiles.

More and more Chinese SAP customers are signing up for the German tech giant’s portfolio of cloud solutions, particularly the Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) offering RISE with SAP.

RISE with SAP has been powering the company’s pivot to becoming a cloud company since its January 2021 launch, enabling organizations to transition their IT infrastructure to the cloud and scale transformation efforts according to their own terms and timelines. Over 650 customers have chosen SAP’s intelligent enterprise resource planning (ERP) system SAP S/4HANA during the second quarter of 2022. More than 60% of these organizations were new customers.

The latest financial results provide a strong indication that SAP is setting a new standard for business management and actively giving customers the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing marketplace. In Q2 2022, the signature cloud product was also selected by an increasing number of Chinese organizations to power their mission-critical business processes. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

According to SAP Chief Executive Officer and Executive Board Member Christian Klein, the performance of SAP during the second quarter demonstrates that the company’s solutions are fulfilling customer needs better than they ever have before. He went on to say that the transformation to the cloud is happening far more quickly than anticipated, and that cloud revenue has exceeded expectations and is now SAP’s primary source of revenue.

“We have a strong business opportunity, and with S/4HANA’s current cloud to-be-delivered business growth of 100%, SAP’s market share is steadily increasing,” Klein further shared.

Chinese SAP Customers Embark on a Digital Transformation Journey

Aside from international conglomerate Lei Shing Hong Limited and mobile lighting company Olight, we will also explore in this article some of the Chinese companies that have recently embarked on an intelligent enterprise journey leveraging the BTaaS signature cloud offering from the German software giant.

Hisense Group

Hisense is a popular Chinese company that specializes in home appliances, and manufactures color TVs and refrigerators. It also has nearly 30 factories at home and abroad through its recent acquisitions.

As a long-time customer of SAP, Hisense had been looking for a new way to streamline employee management in a cost-effective manner, so they decided to implement RISE with SAP. The low investment and ease of use made it an attractive choice for the company as they felt it would allow them to effectively integrate their human and financial management alongside property control. It will also support globally coordinated business activities and Research & Development (R&D) systems.

Zoomlion

After expanding technology and innovation for 30 years, Zoomlion has grown from the birthplace of China’s construction machinery technology to a global enterprise. With its overseas business always looking for innovation, Zoomlion’s overseas subsidiary chose RISE with SAP to be the foundation of their new software platform.

The company has a clear, ambitious plan to leverage the cloud and automate their standardized management practices in order to meet the company’s ambitious global expansion goals. In particular, they are looking to rapidly deploy standards across the entire enterprise, provide support for overseas branches, and finally, meet local regulatory requirements quickly so that they can operate as efficiently as possible.

Shandong Jingbo Holding Development Co., Ltd.

As one of the leading private refining and chemical companies in the Shandong province, Shandong Jingbo Holdings has decided to move its management to the cloud in order to support the group’s high-quality development strategy and meet regulatory needs in an era of “dual carbon”. To this end, it has chosen to use RISE with SAP as its enterprise cloud solution.

By focusing on the ERP cloud-based full coverage, optimizing the process and internal control, and financial standardization, Shandong Jingbo Holdings hopes to improve the management level of the group and lay a digital foundation for its business expansion.

Choosing SAP Solutions to Become an Intelligent Enterprise

Demonstrating SAP’s success in the country, the following Chinese organizations have also partnered with the tech giant in the second quarter of 2022 to accelerate business process transformation and help them scale growth.

  • Biopharmaceutical company BeiGene was looking for a centralized solution to streamline procurement, contract management, and payments across the company’s offices around the world. The company chose SAP Ariba, hoping to quickly build a unified procurement management platform in the cloud and create an integrated solution from procurement, contract, to payment.
  • Battlely, one of the country’s most prestigious and celebrated luxury car dealership groups, has chosen to deploy SAP Intelligent Robotic Processing Automation (SAP iRPA) and SAP Cloud Application Services (SAP CAS) in order to save time on tasks such as data acquisition, information aggregation, and automation.
  • Chinese fast food brand Lao Niangjiu has renewed its contract for the SAP Commerce Cloud and expanded the database to consolidate the construction of the menu management center and order middle platform, thereby improving business management efficiency.
  • Battery manufacturer and exporter Leoch International has chosen to implement SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Process Automation, and RISE with SAP to provide a more comprehensive approach to enterprise operations by creating a full chain of cost, quotation, order, and production systems.
  • In the early days of their establishment, Haichen New Energy’s rapid growth in business necessitated a high-standard operating system, and so they selected SAP S/4HANA as their platform, as well as SAP Sales Cloud, SAP Service Cloud, and SAP BTP.
  • Aohai Technology chose RISE with SAP, SAP BTP, and other solutions from SAP to help them move to the cloud and allow for integrated management of their supply chain.

This month, new SAP sustainability programs have been announced in China to help local companies become sustainable, intelligent enterprises.

The German enterprise software giant’s leading position in the industry emphasizes its quest to build solutions that assist organizations in running better and in a more sustainable way. In November of 2021, Terra Carta — a charter that establishes the framework of a recovery plan to 2030 putting Nature, People, and Planet at the center of value creation — highlighted the sustainability initiatives that SAP has implemented both within the organization and its ecosystem. This reinforces SAP’s unrelenting commitment to being an exemplary leader in promoting technological innovation while simultaneously integrating sustainability throughout all of its business operations.

In China, SAP has formed a “Sustainable Development and Practice Strategic Alliance” to create a platform to join forces with many players in the sector, focus on their respective expertise, shine a spotlight on collaborative innovation, and enable Chinese enterprises in accelerating the realization of the country’s “dual carbon” goal. The alliance can be broken down into four categories: co-creation with customers, consultancy and methodologies, policy and people, and solutions and practices. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

SAP Global Executive Vice President and President at SAP Greater China Dr. Chenhong Huang believes that emerging Chinese businesses are innovative, collaborative, and environmentally conscious, and that the idea of sustainable development is on par with the promotion of business transformation. He went on to say that companies must integrate sustainable development into the processes of their major strategies and ventures.

“Using digital processes means to realize the visualization, transparency and quantification of carbon emission data, realize carbon reduction, meet dynamic regulatory needs and international trade rules, and discover new business opportunities. We will adhere to the principle of “in China, for China’s philosophy”, to be a fellow traveler for the sustainable development of a new Chinese enterprise,” Huang further explained.

New SAP Sustainability Measures in China

The School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, the joint innovation model unit State Grid Digital Science and Technology, and several local and global SAP partners are among the first 10 founding members of the “Sustainable Development and Practice Strategic Alliance.”  SAP’s latest set of initiatives intend to enable businesses to achieve their goals of lowering their carbon footprint and fostering economic growth through a variety of productive channels, including data transparency, industrial collaboration, and innovative business practices.

Commenting on the new partnership, Professor Bai Chong’en, Dean at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, stated in the SAP Sustainability Forum:

“We are very happy to join the “Sustainable Development and Practice Strategic Alliance” to jointly promote the healthy development of the industry and contribute to the realization of high-quality economic development in China.”

Moreover, the “Panjin Index” framework has also been officially unveiled in the SAP Sustainability Forum.  This is a holistic index of urban sustainable development that assesses pertinent variables such as safety, economy, and green development in a comprehensive manner. It is anticipated that the “Panjin Index” will become a useful instrument that will aid cities in the process of implementing sustainable development goals.

The project was initially discussed in an in-depth discussion last year between SAP and the Panjin City Government. Under the agreement, SAP assisted Panjin in the development of a system for the monitoring and simulation of urban carbon emissions by supplying a suite of software and solutions that were built on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

Thrilled to being working closely with the German tech giant in a sustainability program, Xing Peng, Deputy Secretary of Panjin Municipal Party Committee and Mayor, said:

“We are very happy it (Panjin City) can cooperate with SAP to establish a green development and dual-carbon innovation center project, jointly create a comprehensive urban carbon management plan, and strive to explore new paths for sustainable development practices in the province and the country, as well as for local governments to take into account low-carbon management and economic development.”

Five series of lists and up to 30 subcategories have been created for the SAP Digital Transformation “Dingge Awards” 2022 in China to further demonstrate organisations’ journey to becoming sustainable, intelligent enterprises through innovation.

SAP China established the Dingge Awards to celebrate customers’ progress in business transformation leveraging SAP technologies. The awards aim to recognise firms in mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong that have outperformed their competition, highlighting their digital transformation efforts in recent years. These organisations have built an effective strategy that has enabled them to take the lead in their respective product markets and sectors, while also taking into consideration the onset of the digital economy’s new customer needs, capabilities, key infrastructure, and industry best practices, among other factors. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

Dr. Huang Chenhong, who officially took on the role of SAP Global Executive Vice President and President of Greater China in August last year, said in a statement:

“In line with the macro trends of digital economy, industrial synergy, and green development, ‘new Chinese enterprises’ are becoming full-data smart enterprises, full-link collaborative enterprises, and full-scale enterprises. SAP will continue to deepen the concept of ‘in China, for China’ and be the enabler of the digital transformation of ‘new Chinese enterprises’ in the cloud era.”

Commenting on the 2022 Dingge Award, he further shared:

“We look forward to discovering ‘new China’ through the ‘Dingge Award’ — the company’s digital transformation pioneer — sharing successful experience, leading the transformation and upgrading of the industry, and jointly promoting high-quality development through innovation.”

This year’s “Dingge Awards” are sponsored by China’s Harvard Business Review and SAP, with academic support provided by the Global Business Research Institute of Tsinghua University, which is highly important in the industry. It has been conducted for five consecutive years now and has attracted over 500 enterprises and more than 1,000 projects to showcase their initiatives. Remarkable customer cases in the past include National Energy Group, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), Mindray Medical, Anhui Heli, Juhua Group, Xiaomi and other companies that have exhibited innovation through SAP solutions.

According to Professor Li Donghong from the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, the SAP digital transformation awards are given to those that successfully create value through digital transformation, sustain innovation, and have a beneficial impact on industrial change. He added:

“I look forward to working with many experts this year to visit and investigate more innovative companies, to learn more about the significance of digital transformation of companies for industrial chain innovation and green and sustainable development, and to further deepen the understanding of research on the digital transformation of Chinese enterprises.”

This year, several new customers signed up for the German enterprise software giant’s cloud services. The Business Transformation as a Service (BTaaS) offering RISE with SAP was particularly popular in Q1 along with other solutions including SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), SAP S/4HANA, SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation (SAP iRPA), SAP Sales Cloud, SAP Commerce Cloud, and SAP Ariba.

However, Liu Xiao, Co-Producer and General Manager of the Chinese Edition of Harvard Business Review, believes that there is still a long way for the business community to realise the value and inevitability of digital transformation and to truly complete digital practice.

“I sincerely hope that this year’s ‘Dingge Award’ will be held successfully, and look forward to more ‘new Chinese enterprises’ to become role models and benchmarks for China’s digital transformation,” Liu Xiao concluded.

Reinforcing the German tech giant’s unwavering commitment to using SAP digital technology in enabling green development, the United Nations Global Compact Network in China recently named the SAP Product Carbon Footprint Analytics cloud solution as the best practice in the “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutral” category.

The UN Global Compact, which was established at the organisation’s headquarters in 2000, is the world’s largest and highest-level multinational program for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development. It is dedicated to encouraging ethical corporate practices for shared value and helping accomplish the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In China, the local network strives to encourage more Chinese enterprises to sign up for the UN Global Compact, and to push more companies to adopt and apply the organisation’s 10 principles on the environment, labor rights, human rights, and anti-corruption. Aside from these objectives, it aspires to improve the interaction between Chinese companies and the international community, enhance the global reputation and image of local businesses, and promote the long-term development of Chinese firms in the context of economic globalisation.

Recently, China’s UN Global Compact Network held a selection activity for the “Enterprise Best Practices for Achieving SDGs” to better understand and summarise the sustainable development of local enterprises and propel the UN agenda. SAP has been named to this list for the third year in a row, demonstrating the company’s commitment to advancing the implementation of SDGs over the course of several years. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

The cloud solution SAP Product Carbon Footprint Analytics, which was developed by the SAP China Research Institute, was named the best practice in the “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutral” category. As a key component of the Climate 21 initiative, the cloud product allows for more clarity and transparency on the carbon footprint of products along their full value chain, including manufacturing and raw material consumption as well as transportation and logistics.

Enabling Green Development Through SAP Digital Technology

In order to make carbon emission data more visible and quantifiable, SAP digital technology and solutions are being developed with the goal of assisting enterprises in integrating carbon reduction strategies into their business processes and making their green development objectives a reality. Dr. Li Ruicheng, SAP Global Senior Vice President and Director of SAP China Research Institute, shared in a press release statement:

“The application of digital technology can help companies measure and calculate carbon emissions in a dynamic regulatory environment, and take effective measures to implement low-carbon strategies and achieve green development.”

“SAP China Research Institute has more than 4,000 R&D (research and development) engineers. With strong local innovation strength, we have been deeply involved in 90{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of SAP’s global product research and development, and continue to contribute to the digital transformation and sustainable development of customers in China and around the world,” Dr. Li Ruicheng further explained.

The “dual carbon” goal has emerged as a significant priority for Chinese companies today and local businesses are also actively exploring the implementation of low-carbon strategies in their operations. Last year, an in-depth meeting was held between the Panjin City Government and SAP to exchange their perspectives on the “Green Development Platform Project” in Shuangtaizi District in China where SAP digital software and solutions will play a critical role in the achievement of China’s environmental objectives.
