With digital transformation sweeping all sectors, Arya Noble, a distinguished entity in Indonesia’s health and new ventures realm, recently embarked on its SAP journey.

Partnering with RISE with SAP, the company is tapping into cloud-based ERP to revolutionize its operations, optimize efficiency, and reshape healthcare experiences. This landmark venture doesn’t merely signify a dynamic shift in Arya Noble’s technological strategy but also denotes a significant stride towards realizing Indonesia’s nation-building objectives through its ‘Making Indonesia 4.0’ agenda.

Renowned for its flagship ERHA brand, Arya Noble has established a reputation for providing top-class clinical treatments. Its wide portfolio also encompasses other highly regarded brands like GENERO, Derma XP, and Marco. Arya Noble’s unique value comes from its full ownership of the complete process, from production and distribution to brand establishment. The company is also marking its commitment to cutting-edge skincare solutions by setting up Skinproof, the only local dermatology research lab in Indonesia. This lab concentrates on rigorous testing of a multitude of global skincare and makeup products to ensure their safety and efficacy.

While Arya Noble’s diverse portfolio spanning manufacturing to consumers has been beneficial, it also presented challenges. The complexity and vast scale of operations also necessitated a robust, agile, and scalable ERP system. However, the legacy system they utilized was not equipped to meet this demand, resulting in operational inefficiencies, poor data traceability, and siloed departments.

An SAP Journey Accelerating Digital Transformation

Yonathan Moniaga, Arya Noble’s Chief Innovation Officer, recollects the moment the company launched a comprehensive digital transformation initiative in 2022. This was intended to bolster its digital presence, improve customer engagement, and streamline internal operations, thereby paving the way for future growth and innovation. The critical decision to adopt RISE with SAP emerged from this initiative at the close of Q3 2023. Moniaga further explains how this move aims to foster predictive manufacturing, aligning perfectly with the Indonesian Government’s nation-building agenda through the ‘Making Indonesia 4.0’ roadmap.

The integration of numerous SAP solutions, including SAP Finance, SAP Controlling, SAP Material Management, and more, is targeted at promoting a more meticulous data exchange between Sales and Finance departments. The SAP journey is designed to improve reporting mechanisms and enhance the visibility of crucial data. Moniaga elucidates that the aim is to implement more efficient book closing procedures and enhance traceability, which will enable insights from downstream to upstream processes within the organization.

RISE with SAP: A Stride Towards Data-Driven Decisions

Moniaga talks about the importance of transitioning to RISE with SAP and how it supports the company’s diverse and expanding portfolio. He emphasizes that their strategy focuses on fostering sustainable growth through automation and data-driven decisions. He expresses optimism as they start to experience the potential of RISE with SAP and the promise it holds for delivering products that accurately meet customer needs.

Andreas Diantoro, SAP Indonesia Managing Director, speaks about the privilege of supporting household brands like Arya Noble in their digital transformation and expansion journey. Diantoro mentions how through RISE with SAP, Arya Noble has the power to make more informed strategic decisions. This promotes predictive manufacturing and information visibility across departments, contributing significantly to Arya Noble’s business growth. He also comments on the meaningful impact this digital transformation will have on the broader healthcare industry in Indonesia.

As Arya Noble steps forward in its SAP journey, it showcases the potential and benefits of integrating advanced technologies into traditional industries. It serves as an exemplar to the healthcare industry and beyond, of how digital transformation can streamline operations, enhance customer experience, and pave the way for future growth and development.

For manufacturing giants like Indonesia’s Sari Murni Group (SMG), the adoption of the SAP business transformation offering RISE with SAP signifies a bold leap into a future where efficiency, agility, and strategic insight are not just goals but realities.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the manufacturing industry, digital transformation has become more than a buzzword—it’s a necessity. Leading this change in Indonesia, Sari Murni Group (SMG), a renowned snacks manufacturer, is leveraging the power of SAP’s innovative solutions in partnership with SAP Indonesia and IBM Consulting Indonesia. This strategic move marks a significant shift in how manufacturing businesses can optimize operations and drive growth in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Indonesia’s Technological Leap into the Future

Indonesia, a vibrant hub of manufacturing, is embracing technology to bolster its competitive edge in the global market. The ‘Making Indonesia 4.0’ roadmap introduced by the government in 2018 aims to revolutionize seven key manufacturing sectors, including food and beverages, through advancements in AI, automation, cloud computing, and IoT. This initiative underlines the urgent need for manufacturers to adapt to a new digital paradigm, where AI-powered tools reshape customer experiences and operational efficiencies.

For two decades, SMG has been a household name in Indonesia, spreading its reach to over 10 countries. The transition from its legacy ERP systems to a unified, cloud-based ERP solution marks a pivotal moment in SMG’s history. Previously, disparate systems across various departments led to inefficient data reporting and management challenges. With the implementation of RISE with SAP, SMG is not only enhancing its reporting capabilities but also harmonizing business processes and streamlining data processing across its units in West Java and East Java.

The Role of RISE with SAP in Business Transformation

RISE with SAP, a comprehensive business transformation package featuring SAP S/4HANA, is a game-changer for enterprises looking to shift their ERP to the cloud. For SMG, this move has resulted in increased automation of end-to-end business processes, improved inventory, costing, pricing controls, and enhanced monthly financial reporting. With IBM Consulting Indonesia as the implementation partner, SMG is now positioned to further boost employee productivity and customer experience.

Teguh Ilham, Director at Sari Murni, acknowledges the transformative impact of RISE with SAP. This digital overhaul is enabling SMG to increase operational efficiency, improve decision-making processes, and foster in-depth analytical work, thanks to enhanced data visibility and integration.

Andreas Diantoro, Managing Director at SAP Indonesia, emphasizes how SMG’s digitalization journey, powered by cutting-edge technologies, is optimizing business processes and catalyzing development. The integration of AI and cloud computing facilitates precise and actionable data collection across the company, enabling faster strategic decisions that propel growth.

IBM Consulting Indonesia: Pioneering Digital Transformations

IBM Consulting Indonesia also plays a crucial role in this transformation. Deep Bhau, Managing Partner Indonesia at IBM Consulting, highlights their commitment to driving successful digital transformations. By collaborating with SAP, IBM Consulting Indonesia helps SMG unlock new levels of manufacturing efficiency, competitiveness, and productivity, rooted in reliable, responsible, and regulation-compliant technologies.

Sari Murni Group’s journey with RISE with SAP is more than a story of a business upgrading its systems. It’s also a testament to the transformative power of digital innovation in the manufacturing sector. As companies like SMG embrace these changes, they set a benchmark for others to follow, showcasing how technology can not only streamline operations but also open new avenues for growth and competitiveness in the global market. This journey is not just about keeping up with the times; it’s about leading the charge into a future where digitalization is the cornerstone of success in the manufacturing industry.

SAP Indonesia’s SAP Student Training and Rotation (SAP STAR) internship program plays an essential role in helping Indonesian youth pursue a career in tech. The program provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the technology industry and acquire skills that are in high demand by employers.

Indonesia has been striving to develop its tech industry and is making progress towards becoming a digital economy. The government is implementing various initiatives to promote digital transformation, such as providing digital literacy programs, supporting startups, and developing digital infrastructure.

Many young Indonesians are enthusiastic about pursuing a career in the tech industry due to its potential for growth and high demand for skilled workers. The country has a growing number of tech startups, and some have successfully attracted investment from local and international investors.

However, the education system in Indonesia still faces challenges in preparing students for careers in technology. The curriculum in many schools and universities is not always up-to-date with the latest developments in the industry. Therefore, many young people need to acquire skills through additional courses or training programs outside the formal education system.

Empowering Indonesian Youth in Tech Through SAP STAR

The SAP STAR program provides a comprehensive internship program for students studying in universities across Indonesia. It offers students the chance to work on real projects, learn from experienced professionals, and gain exposure to various aspects of the technology industry.

Through the initiative, students can learn about SAP’s innovative technology solutions, including enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, supply chain management, and data analytics. They also get a chance to learn about the company’s values, culture, and work environment, which helps them prepare for future careers in the tech industry.

One of the significant benefits of the SAP STAR program is that it provides students with opportunities to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world problems. This practical experience can be valuable when seeking future employment as it demonstrates the student’s ability to apply theory to practice.

Moreover, the program gives an excellent platform for networking and building relationships with professionals in the technology industry. Students can learn from experienced mentors and develop relationships that can help them secure future employment opportunities.

Providing Holistic Career Foundations for Students

SAP Indonesia’s Managing Director (MD) Andreas Diantoro highlights that the SAP STAR program demonstrates the importance of know-how and know-who in the world of work. The initiative offers a full-year rotation system where students can explore different roles, build their technical and business skills, and gain experience in various parts of the company.

Throughout the program, students work with mentors who serve as counselors and supervisors. This enables them to learn directly from experienced professionals and gain insights from both SAP and its customers. Additionally, the program aims to provide a holistic and strategic overview of employment in the technology industry, helping students build a solid career foundation.

The SAP STAR program has been running for two periods since 2022, and its rotation system prepares students in a mature way by exposing them to the problems of each division. This comprehensive experience equips them with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in the technology industry.

According to Diantoro, the tech giant has developed an initiative aimed at refining key skills, such as critical and objective thinking, problem-solving and innovation, confident presentation abilities, adeptness with advanced technology, and professionalism coupled with a proactive attitude.

“The point is, SAP STAR participants must be proactive, learn a lot, and get to know their seniors so that this program can positively impact their learning process,” he remarked.

Accessing and Preparing for the Internship Program

Interested individuals can access information about the SAP STAR program and its registration and selection process on SAP’s website. The registration and selection period runs from August to October each year. Candidates can also find details about the qualifications required for SAP STAR participants on the website.

Apart from preparing the necessary documents, candidates should equip themselves with knowledge and insights in the IT and business fields to ensure a smooth selection process. Successful candidates proceed to the onboarding stage, where they get introduced to SAP and the various roles they will undertake during their internship period.

While SAP provides several valuable opportunities for internship activities, candidates are also encouraged to take a proactive approach to get the most out of the program.

The HR digital transformation at PT Bank Danamon Indonesia is being supported by SAP SuccessFactors in order to automate the financial institution’s core processes and raise the level of productivity among management and staff.

More and more companies are now undergoing a digital transformation, which entails a complete rethinking of their operations from the ground up, in order to better serve their customers. To stay ahead of the competition in the Indonesian banking industry — which has a significant challenge of delivering an unparalleled customer experience — organizations are determined to make it their mission to provide a solution by leveraging the latest technologies.

In order to better serve its more than 70 million clients across the country, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia collaborated with SAP Indonesia to fortify its central processes and systems. Several areas of the company’s operations have been targeted for improvement, leading to the adoption of seven different SAP modules. Another leading general banking services provider, PT Bank Danamon Indonesia, also executed digital transformation supported by SAP technologies to enhance its human resources (HR) management.

Since Bank Danamon recognizes the importance of the “People” element in a digital transformation strategy, it has tapped SAP Indonesia to help propel innovation and improve its operations through digital business process solutions. The financial institution prioritized investments in cutting-edge technologies that would empower and assist employees who are essential to the organization’s success. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

Bank Danamon’s digital transformation is centered on improving the use of HR data and other business data in making operational decisions. As a result, the company’s HR team needed a system that can handle not just the daily tasks of capturing and maintaining HR data, but also the more complex ones of managing dynamic big data. Since 2017, Bank Danamon has relied on SAP SuccessFactors, with the goal of maximizing the benefit of these well-established digital solutions within the business.

Detailing more about how important HR digital transformation is to the company, especially now in an all-digital world, PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk HR Digitalization Head Handri Yustanto shared:

“HR plays an important role in implementing digital transformation and even sees it as a business partner. Bank Danamon itself is trying to be adaptive to the situation and is committed to implementing a comprehensive transformation in the HR field. This can be seen in the HR process with more distributed control, high collaboration, centralized coordination, as well as process agility and speed.”

Furthermore, Yustanto stated that the organization has been able to reduce more than 70% of employee complaints, automate 64% of formerly manual operations, and give managers or staff decision-making control over 30% of the activities with added value as a result of the HR digital transformation.

Expediting HR Digital Transformation with SAP SuccessFactors

Solutions offered by SAP SuccessFactors are hosted in the cloud and are used to perform anything from basic HR and payroll to talent management, HR analytics, workforce planning, and even employee engagement. HCM Suite components have been rebranded as SAP SuccessFactors HXM Suite and now offer customized experiences to boost productivity and employee engagement. Since its inception in 2001 and incorporation into the SAP family in 2012, SAP SuccessFactors products have been adopted by more than 235 million users in over 200 countries and nations worldwide.

According to SAP Indonesia Managing Director Andreas Diantoro, Bank Danamon’s digital transformation using SAP SuccessFactors was a success because it optimized core processes and prepared human resources, both of which are crucial for adapting to new business conditions. He added that Bank Danamon’s digital transformation is in line with HR trends expected to grow in the next years, such as change management, which leads to improved corporate performance, and people analytics, which helps businesses better understand and motivate their employees.

“Now, HR benefits from SAP SuccessFactors as it is equipped with intelligent capabilities to empower business users to unlock potential through easy-to-use interfaces, shorten the time to set up complex system landscapes, and align data from multiple sources, enabling business users to perform analysis sophisticated in data-based HR management,” Diantoro noted.

Bank Danamon’s continuing digital transformation project is motivated by a desire to provide significant and tangible results for the business in the near future.  Yustanto stated that they are in the process of establishing the HR Strategic Initiative roadmap 2023-2024, and that one of their goals is to construct a data-driven system that makes use of rich and dynamic HR big data to power HR strategic decisions.

“SAP Indonesia will wholeheartedly continue to support Bank Danamon’s business in its digital transformation journey,” the SAP MD remarked.

By undergoing SAP ERP software implementation, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia intends to maintain its position as the major micro-lending finance company in the country while simultaneously bolstering its core business functions.

As a long-time leader in the market for the financial services industry (FSI), SAP has been providing support to more than 80 percent of the top 1,000 banks and insurers all over the world. In 2021, the German enterprise software giant launched SAP Fioneer, a specialized FSI unit co-owned by entrepreneurial investor Dediq. The subsidiary intends to accelerate SAP’s financial services customers’ journey to the cloud through the implementation of new enterprise applications that are based on SAP technology.

At SAP Indonesia, Managing Director Andreas Diantoro said that the company believes that attempting to improve the overall performance of the numerous businesses and organizations operating within the financial services industry will allow citizens to benefit from the most favorable outcomes. Recently, SAP was tapped by PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia — which is one of the largest state-owned banks in the country — for its enterprise resource planning (ERP) digital transformation project.

“With the support from the SAP system, Bank Rakyat Indonesia can improve services for both internal and external stakeholders, as well as become a more trusted bank in implementing good corporate governance . I think that not only Bank Rakyat Indonesia customers can have the opportunity to improve the quality of their banking experience, but also residents throughout Indonesia,” SAP MD Diantoro shared.

PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia has implemented a hybrid cloud model consisting of both online and on-premise services. This has been done so that the organization can have a dedicated and robust financial system as its backbone, which then becomes the “single source of truth” for all of its financial data.

Driving Business Growth with SAP ERP Software Implementation

PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia is working with SAP Indonesia to strengthen its core systems and processes as part of its efforts to improve the quality of service it provides to its over 70 million customers across the entire country. The company has adopted seven different SAP modules in an attempt to optimize many facets of its business operations. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

Acting as the Project Manager of BRI Financial Enterprise System Implementation, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Executive Vice President Sandra Chalik said that the organization’s long-term goals are to be recognized as the most forward-thinking banking group in the Southeast Asian region and to take the lead in the digital transformation of the banking industry. He explained:

“For that, we must continue to improve the quality of our services, expand our reach and maintain good relations with all parties.”

Chalik further said that because of the digitalization program, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia has been able to get more detailed information, which assists in meeting the auditing and financial governance requirements of the organization. He noted that ERP technology offers a number of benefits, one of which is the ability to reduce the number of personnel needed in the back office, further enabling the company to concentrate more on expanding its business.

According to the bank, three modules have been developed and implemented up to this point. Moreover, SAP Group Reporting, SAP Income and Expenses (IEM), and SAP Fixed Asset Management (FAM) have been adopted by PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia to:

  • Improve their ability to handle and keep track of the general ledger (GL) both within and across branch offices.
  • Increase the group’s traceability, and move the preparation of the financial consolidation of the group along more quickly.
  • Better understand data structures that are typically multidimensional and varied in order to carry out a more in-depth investigation of them.

“Thanks to these modules, we are also able to automate many of our internal operations, including for accounting and reporting needs. The process of preparing BRI Group’s consolidated financial reports can also be done more quickly and with more intensity – reports that were previously generated in three months can now be completed every month, which is good news for us,” Chalik concluded.

Student Training and Rotation or STAR is a program dedicated to SAP internships supporting the youth’s digital talent skills development across different countries including Indonesia.

The German tech giant’s work-integrated learning program, which is supported on a global scale, offers real-world experience to students, complementing academic studies by directing and preparing them for careers in the future. Participants in the STAR Program are able to rotate across numerous SAP business areas while simultaneously receiving on-the-job and structured development as well as mentoring from executives across the company’s customer success organisational departments.

Hongwei Lu, Senior Manager of STAR Learning and Development, Southeast Asia at SAP, mentioned that several SAP global executives including CEO Christian Klein and Executive Board Member Thomas Saueressig are graduates of past STAR programs. She added:

“That’s two out of six executive members and STAR students have had a great opportunity to become part of the top ranks of our company and other leading technology companies. This is our way of shaping future leaders even before the get-go of formal work – call it talent-hacking!”

In Indonesia, a survey conducted by East Ventures for the Digital Competitiveness Index (EV-DCI) 2022 in collaboration with Katadata and PwC Indonesia indicated that almost 80{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of local businesses have placed a strong emphasis on making investments in information and communication technology (ICT) as well as digital transformation initiatives. The estimates provided by the Ministry of Communication and Information stated that the country would require nine million digital talents within the next 15 years, which works out to an annual average of 600,000 digital assets.

SAP Internships Fostering Indonesia’s Digital Talents

Since its inception in 1979, the STAR program has been implemented in a total of 13 different countries with this year marking the beginning of the initiative’s rollout in Indonesia. The SAP internships last for one academic year and accept individuals who are in their second year of college. Furthermore, they focus on helping students in the information technology and consulting industries be better prepared and skilled for the workforce of the future.

Moreover, SAP Indonesia developed STAR as a direct response to a move by the Indonesian government to cultivate multifaceted talents that are able to face employment challenges in the world today. Not only does SAP Indonesia want to increase interpersonal skills with the help of STAR, but also the digital literacy and general ICT capabilities that are essential for the digital economy.

Additionally, Participants are given the opportunity to switch departments every three months, specifically moving between the Consulting, Customer Engagement, Solution, Sales, and ICA divisions. The SAP e-learning platform also assists trainees in expanding their knowledge of the relevant industry as well as their technical expertise.

Andreas Diantoro, who was appointed as SAP Indonesia’s MD in 2018, hopes that the STAR program would be able to help the country fill the current gap in digital talent skills while also developing young leaders who will be early movers in the industry.

“SAP’s STAR program is targeted at equipping and maturing students to ensure they are workforce-ready,” he added.

This month, the SAP Indonesia MD won the Best CEO Award in the Enterprise Application Software category in the recently concluded event organised by The Iconomics. Diantoro has high expectations that the award, along with the efforts of SAP, will encourage more individuals in Indonesia to strive for greatness and make significant contributions to the development of their nation.

SAP Digital Supply Chain solutions, which received top recognition from both Gartner and IDC in 2020, have been enabling many organisations around the world to remain resilient, agile, and intelligent amidst the unprecedented challenges caused by the pandemic.

Indonesia’s supply chain sector has been strongly hit by the impacts of COVID-19 mainly because the nation still heavily relies on human factors rather than automation. To further the advancement of Indonesian businesses’ supply chain, global IT solutions and services provider YASH Technologies and SAP Platinum Partner Soltius Indonesia joined forces to bring SAP Digital Supply Chain solutions and services in the region. SNP Schneider-Neureither & Partner SE, a leading global provider of business transformation solutions specifically for SAP® landscapes, today announced the successful implementation of its SAP® S/4HANA project with Indonesian energy conglomerate PT ABM Investama Tbk (ABM Group). This is the first next-generation enterprise conversion in Indonesia that was orchestrated utilising SNP BLUEFIELD™ – the automated digital transformation to the SAP® S/4HANA digital core. The project was carried out in association with SNP’s strategic partner IBM.

Entering the year 2020, the ABM Group continues to strengthen its business to become a highly agile conglomerate with integrated mining ecosystems. Deep in the heart of the enterprise was a system and data landscape that powered the business operations, automating core business processes and the movement of data – the organisation’s life blood – from process to process.

The SNP BLUEFIELD™ approach played a pivotal role in the success of our SAP S/4HANA transformation by automating and accelerating multiple complex projects in a single go-live within six months with a minimised downtime of less than 48 hours at minimal cost and risk. The approach leverages the power of software automation together with unparalleled visibility and analytics, allowing you to get the business benefits of S/4HANA right away as compared to traditional methods and ensuring you don’t wait years to build up enough historical data for the analytics to work. It thus delivers faster return on investment (ROI), increased business continuity, agility, lower total cost of ownership, improved governance and compliance, said Doni Syamsurianto, Chief Information Officer, PT ABM Investama Tbk.

A highly automated software-driven approach is the ideal enabler for complex data migrations in order to make them fast and secure. The defining characteristic of  SNP BLUEFIELD™ is the flexibility to pick the best data and processes for transformation so that our clients can get the business value out of SAP S/4HANA right away. This is the essence of SNP’s 25 years of experience from more than 12,500 successful projects. It is the only software-based solution that addresses both business and technology-driven transformations with up to 70{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} reduction in project time, cost and risk, facilitating significantly enhanced business performance and enabling innovation, stated Gerald Faust, Managing Director and CEO, JAPAC, SNP Transformations SEA Pte Ltd.

The project, triggered by a strategic business and IT decision, needed to be powered by radical changes in ABM’s business models through digitalisation, modernisation and convergence. A logical step was to convert its existing on-premise SAP ERP 6.0 EhP7 to the S/HANA 1809 on AWS platform. The key was to analyse and compare systems with an automated software approach, then selectively transform and migrate data with maximum speed, accuracy and efficiency while reducing business disruption with minimised downtime. The project involved multiple aspects like automated selective data migration, carve-out of company codes, move to cloud, non-Unicode to Unicode, mapping and harmonisation of business partner master data within aggressive timeline targets and budgets, explained Dr. Oswin Hartung, Managing Director, JAPAC Delivery for SNP.

SNP is SAP-certified and an SAP OEM Partner. SNP’s customer engagements have included some of the largest and most significant S/4HANA projects, mergers, acquisitions and divestitures. The company’s roster of customers includes Siemens, Kellogg’s, L’Oreal, Esprit, Honda and HP Enterprise.

Cloud in Indonesia is getting much attention as the country makes its way to boosting its economic growth and dominating the digital economy in the Southeast Asia region. It may be the fourth most populous country in the world, but it is also the nation in Southeast Asia with the largest economy. And cloud giants have their eyes set on Indonesia for the deployment of its data center.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud announced their plans to launch cloud in Indonesia, as reported by Data Center Dynamics. However, Alibaba Cloud was already a step ahead as it put up its second data center in the country this year.

At present, Indonesia is entering a phase where they openly welcome the digital age and is preparing the grounds for startups who would like considering to establish their IT systems on the cloud due to factors such as affordability and scalability. As for larger organisations, they are most likely to build data centres.

Sutedjo Tjahjadi, PT Datacomm Diangraha’s managing director for cloud business, explained that startups could utilise cloud systems to create prototypes and get started on their companies quickly. Meanwhile, large companies that are already in operations are adopting cloud to meet their requirements and resource needs with consideration to the readiness of the market for cloud tech.

Additionally, Fanky Christian, the director and co-founder of PT Daya Cipta Mandiri Solus (DCM) shared that companies will not move to the cloud at the beginning; however, they will migrate standalone systems, such as its HR systems.

Despite the existence of regulations such as the Government Regulation 82 of 2012, which may impact data locality, Christian and Tjahjadi said that this is not a significant barrier to the adoption of the cloud.

Tjahjadi said that the operation of enterprise systems on an overseas cloud isn’t appealing. He noted that running SAP on a public cloud in another country, like Singapore, is going to be a challenge due to the required amount of expensive international bandwidth. He explained that it would depend on the type of applications and deployment.

Tjahjadi warned of hidden costs that may be impacted by the increase of cloud deployments and encouraged businesses to do their share in ensuring that cloud deployments are secured from cyber intrusions. Additionally, he explained:

“Putting the data in the cloud is a lot safer than an on-premises deployment…Protecting their data is the joint responsibility of both the cloud provider and the cloud user.”

Christian also explained that businesses must adopt a multi-cloud strategy, meaning cloud deployments are not limited to a single provider. He also added why human resources is an essential factor in successful digital transformation. He said:

“If you deploy in a data center, you will need the right talent to manage the facilities in the data center.”

He added that the same concept applies to the cloud, where the right expertise is needed to maintain a cloud deployment.

Ultimately, innovation is the key to Indonesian businesses. Tjahjadi concluded that companies should look beyond shifting to digital transformation as a way to reduce costs and consider how it can be used to encourage creativity and innovation using technologies.
