Embracing digital transformation in its human resources domain, Shiseido Co., Ltd. has announced the integration of SAP HR cloud solution, specifically SAP SuccessFactors, into its operations. This significant move signifies the company’s commitment to optimizing personnel management, simplifying payroll processing, and ultimately enhancing overall productivity across its workforce in Japan.

Shiseido Co., Ltd., a global leader in the beauty industry, has declared a significant shift towards enhancing its human resources (HR) management by implementing SAP’s HR cloud SAP SuccessFactors. The reform aims to streamline personnel and payroll management systems to better serve the company’s 24,000 employees in Japan, with operations set to begin in March 2023. SAP will oversee the personnel management sector, while EY Strategy and Consulting (EYSC) will manage the payroll department. Since 2019, Shiseido has utilized SAP SuccessFactors’ talent management functionalities including target and evaluation management, and successor management. The company also leveraged SAP HCM for HR and payroll management. This move to SAP SuccessFactors comes as part of Shiseido’s broader business transformation program, titled “FOCUS (First One Connected and Unified Shiseido).” FOCUS aims to bolster corporate value through the standardization of data, business processes, and the integration of core systems.

The adoption of SAP SuccessFactors allows for an unobstructed data flow among different modules, including talent management, HR management, and payroll calculation. Furthermore, it simplifies integration with existing peripheral HR systems like attendance tracking. Shiseido aims to reduce labor costs and system maintenance expenses through this process optimization and hopes to boost employee productivity via automation and efficiency.

SAP HR Cloud Solution for Digital Transformation

Shiseido’s Deputy Chief People Officer, Emiko Ashida, reiterated the company’s “PEOPLE FIRST” philosophy and underscored the importance of HR in achieving Shiseido’s corporate mission, “BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD.” Ashida expressed hopes that the SAP SuccessFactors system will optimize HR operations and promote strategic planning, thereby leading to more valuable, data-driven HR tasks.

President of SAP Japan, Hiroshi Suzuki, praised Shiseido’s longstanding use of SAP’s personnel system. Suzuki expressed his confidence that the move to SAP SuccessFactors will enhance the integrated flow of personnel-related data, enabling more efficient and productive work styles. He further noted that this change would support diverse employees in maximizing their abilities, contributing to Shiseido’s data-driven management and the realization of the FOCUS transformation program.

On the other hand, Yoichi Taguchi, a partner at EY Strategy and Consulting, emphasized the shared mission between EYSC and Shiseido of building a better working world. Taguchi also conveyed his pleasure in the operational shift to SAP SuccessFactors and affirmed EYSC’s commitment to supporting HR digital transformation (HRDX). He expressed optimism that the standardized operations and data would lay a robust foundation for Shiseido’s HR operations, facilitating the strategic use of data and contributing to the execution of Shiseido’s global HR strategy.

Shiseido’s move to implement SAP SuccessFactors underlines its dedication to fostering a PEOPLE FIRST culture. This strategic transition is a testament to Shiseido’s commitment to investing in its most valuable asset—its people. It illustrates the company’s focus on leveraging technology and strategic planning to drive growth, innovation, and productivity in its workforce, ultimately aiming to create a better world through beauty innovations.

SAP Sales & Service Cloud, commonly known as SAP C4C, is one of SAP’s Customer Experience (CX) solutions that have been optimised by many organisations and countries, including the Philippines, in facing COVID-19 logistical challenges.

SGV & Co. Philippines, the largest professional services firm in the Philippines that provides assurance, tax, transaction, and advisory services, has collaborated with SAP in developing an application that is specific to supporting the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation’s (PDRF) COVID-19 logistics and response. PDRF is the nation’s major private sector vehicle and coordinator for disaster management.

Following EY Malaysia’s deployment of SAP Customer Experience solutions including SAP Sales & Service Cloud for government-linked companies (GLC) and the government-linked investment companies disaster response network (GDRN) in May 2020, SGV & Co., a member of EY Global in the Philippines, has also deployed SAP Customer Experience Solutions such as SAP C4C. The selected technological solutions from SAP aim to provide optimum logistical support and responses to organisations assisting PDRF in supplying personal protective equipment (PPE) and medicines to partner hospitals and other health-related organisations.

Bill Luz, Chief Resilience Officer at PDRF, shared his appreciation of the logistical and technological support from SAP and SGV & Co.:

“Our COVID response has required us to send a wide variety of items such as PPEs, ventilators, as well as providing meals to a large number of healthcare institutions all over the country. This technology enables us to manage our supply and deploy the resources in a timely manner to different organisations.”

Through the SAP CX integrated platform, donations from private institutions and individuals will be distributed accordingly for purchasing and distributing PPEs and medical supplies to hospitals.

Recognising the need for a platform like SAP C4C during these unprecedented times, SGV & Co. Chairman and Managing Partner Wilson Tan expressed the professional services firm’s commitment to the development and implementation of the urgently and aptly needed application from SAP.

SAP Philippines’ COVID-19 Response

SAP Philippines has recently celebrated its 25th year of operations in the country empowering many organisations to run better with innovative technology. Under the COVID-19 environment, SAP continues to provide the country with intelligent technologies that would help institutions and people survive and thrive in the health crisis. The country’s rising COVID-19 cases require a continuous supply of PPEs, hospital supplies, and medicines.

Underpinning the role of technology in the country’s relief efforts during the pandemic, SAP Philippines Managing Director Edler Panlilio said:

“SAP Customer Experience Solutions go beyond the back-end to support NGOs (non-government organizations) such as the PDRF with intelligent technologies that can drive efficiency in facilitating the donations and providing access to necessary supplies. This is an example of how we remain true to our purpose of helping Filipino enterprises including NGOs to run better and, thus, improve the lives of Filipinos.”

For businesses, SAP Philippines MD Panlilio has also been encouraging SMEs to leverage SAP Business One and SAP Business ByDesign as they navigate the road to becoming an intelligent enterprise even in this unpredictable environment. The nation’s economic recovery post-pandemic lies in the ability of the SME ecosystem to thrive by leveraging technology since the sector is responsible for 2.5 million-job creations in the country.

A recent survey by EY and SAP India revealed Indian enterprises’ readiness for the new provisions on tax and technology adoption needed to comply with it.

India has been one of the frontrunners in digital technology advancement in the Asia Pacific region, even surpassing more mature and emerging economies. As the digital consumers in the country grow exponentially, Indian businesses’ digital adoption, particularly the finance and administrative function, needs catching up according to recent studies.

In July, an SAP Concur study revealed that only 11{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of Indian organisations have implemented end-to-end digital finance and administrative processes despite the impending need to eliminate the tedious manual processes. This study reflects the most recent survey conducted by EY and SAP India, which showed the Indian enterprises’ digital readiness to comply with the new provisions of Tax Collected at Source (TCS).

New TCS Provisions in Effect

On October 1, the expansion of the scope for the Tax Collected at Source (TCS) provisions, under the Income Tax Act, has taken full effect. The Finance Act, 2020 has amended the provisions relating to TCS to provide that a seller of goods shall collect tax at the rate of 0.1 per cent (0.075 per cent up to March 31, 2021) if the receipt of sale consideration from a buyer exceeds Rs 50 lakh in the financial year.

The EY and SAP India survey uncovered that Indian companies are not completely equipped to handle the various tax implications of the TCS provisions. Conducted early September 2020, the survey involved over 110 corporate businesses across India to assess their readiness to implement the new provisions on the tax and technology capability of their organisations in addressing the concerns on compliances, validations, and reconciliations with various reporting requirements.

Key Findings

Aside from complying with the new TCS regime, the EY and SAP India study revealed that organisations are anticipating significant challenges on reconciliations, data, systems, processes, and tax audit readiness.

  • 85{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of the respondents shared that their current tax function framework is not completely ready to accommodate the requirements to be able to comply with the new TCS provisions
  • 80{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of the respondents foresee issues around applicability and updating systems and processes as a significant challenge in complying with the new provisions
  • 81{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} expects an increase in manual intervention for their tax teams in reconciling data and ensuring accuracy due to TCS compliances
  • 65{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of the respondents shared that their IT systems need updating for the new TCS regime, which also means that organisations will have to seek alternatives
  • 65{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} admitted that their organisations require a digital solution to automate the entire TCS compliance and reporting life cycle
  • 70{aa282f308afcc222aaa21b0478c79e01a8fedd01972e2180867097bd93930f22} of the respondents revealed that the automated TCS platform should go beyond basic compliance by assisting in proactive reconciliations, data preparation for tax assessments, and tax credits matching

Supporting Tax Transformation

Today, more than ever, the tax and finance function of Indian organisations need to embrace digital adoption to align with the Government’s thrust on technology in ensuring tax compliances and undertaking tax risk assessments.

“Given the intent of TCS provisions, leading organisations are looking for digital solutions which help to not just comply, but also proactively perform reconciliations from a tax audit readiness and internal audit perspective,” said Rahul Patni, Digital Tax Leader at EY India.

Specific to the need for an intelligent, intuitive, and integrated digital fabric to support TCS compliance, EY has developed an automated solution called ‘DigiTCS’ powered by SAP’s Business Technology Platform. Hosted on SAP Cloud Platform, DigiTCS is scalable, secure, modular, and integrated with customer’s SAP ERP.

Anand Raisinghani, Vice President, Platforms and Technologies, SAP India said:

“Our customers need to stay compliant with the evolving regulatory tax framework. As SAP is the financial system of record for majority of Indian enterprises, we responded swiftly to ensure required provisions form part of our solution offering.

Together with EY, we deliver DigiTCS — a comprehensive solution powered by SAP Business Technology Platform. With this, we will empower companies to adapt to the new Tax regime providing them ease of deployment, security, and no disruption to their existing process and business.”

DigiTCS is another result of EY and SAP India’s innovative collaboration that would help Indian organisations in their tax transformation journey.

EY Malaysia echoes the global professional services firm Ernst & Young’s initiatives in battling COVID-19, this time for an efficient medical supplies logistics solution within the country.

Back in March, WHO had warned that COVID-19 is not just another flu outbreak. The pandemic that originated from China has put tremendous pressure on every nation’s health system as well as the supply chain. Many countries around the world are experiencing a shortage of personal protective gear like masks, gloves, and gowns to protect the frontliners treating infected patients.

In Malaysia, recognising the impending need to provide a logistics solution for the medical supplies needed to combat COVID-19, EY Malaysia has deployed SAP Customer Experience solutions including SAP Sales & Service Cloud (aka C4C) for government-linked companies (GLC) and the government-linked investment companies disaster response network (GDRN).

The application’s focus is to provide optimum logistical support and response to organisations working to assist the Ministry of Health (MoH) supply ventilators and protective equipment to hospitals as well as other health-related organisations under its wings. Through an integrated platform, the SAP application is also capable of channelling pledges from institutions and individuals looking to contribute hospital-related items.

EY Malaysia and SAP’s initiatives in tackling COVID-19 supply chain challenges were commended by Shahira Ahmed Bazari, Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah, an impact-based foundation striving to create real and lasting positive social and environmental changes for Malaysia. Shahira said:

“We are heartened by the support extended by organisations such as EY and SAP that have helped the GDRN-led effort to improve our relief and support for MoH and other humanitarian assistance in a coordinated and streamlined manner. “

“We are confident that this collaborative spirit and collective effort within the private sector will continue to have a meaningful impact on the overall effort against COVID-19,” added the Managing Director.

Sang Hoe Chow, EY ASEAN and Malaysia Advisory Managing Partner, expressed that, more than ever, the country’s healthcare frontliners need to be well-equipped and supported as they protect and save lives of their countrymen. He said:

“We believe that the SAP application as implemented by EY Malaysia will contribute greatly towards better coordinating the needs of the various government hospitals and facilities, including the distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves,”

On the same note, Hong Kok Cheong, SAP Malaysia Managing Director, said that the key to a seamless supply chain is intelligence and integration. He said that the German ERP company is pleased to be providing its technologies to drive efficiency and effectiveness in facilitating better healthcare services.

On a global level, EY teamed up with SAP and Qualtrics to aid government and public health organisations worldwide by providing intelligent digital solutions to combat the pandemic. Together, they designed a comprehensive set of custom SAP and Qualtrics solutions made available in over 90 countries worldwide, including across the Asia Pacific, and can be applied in eight different languages through EY implementation and enablement services.

In a joint statement, the organisations said:

“Governments around the world are having to act quickly and decisively as they lead their citizens through uncertain times. These solutions and services help governments quickly interact with their citizens at scale by providing a means of collecting and analyzing data in real-time. This allows them to take immediate action amid an ever-changing situation and bring immense benefit to their citizens during the current crisis.”
