SAP Indonesia’s SAP Student Training and Rotation (SAP STAR) internship program plays an essential role in helping Indonesian youth pursue a career in tech. The program provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the technology industry and acquire skills that are in high demand by employers.

Indonesia has been striving to develop its tech industry and is making progress towards becoming a digital economy. The government is implementing various initiatives to promote digital transformation, such as providing digital literacy programs, supporting startups, and developing digital infrastructure.

Many young Indonesians are enthusiastic about pursuing a career in the tech industry due to its potential for growth and high demand for skilled workers. The country has a growing number of tech startups, and some have successfully attracted investment from local and international investors.

However, the education system in Indonesia still faces challenges in preparing students for careers in technology. The curriculum in many schools and universities is not always up-to-date with the latest developments in the industry. Therefore, many young people need to acquire skills through additional courses or training programs outside the formal education system.

Empowering Indonesian Youth in Tech Through SAP STAR

The SAP STAR program provides a comprehensive internship program for students studying in universities across Indonesia. It offers students the chance to work on real projects, learn from experienced professionals, and gain exposure to various aspects of the technology industry.

Through the initiative, students can learn about SAP’s innovative technology solutions, including enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, supply chain management, and data analytics. They also get a chance to learn about the company’s values, culture, and work environment, which helps them prepare for future careers in the tech industry.

One of the significant benefits of the SAP STAR program is that it provides students with opportunities to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world problems. This practical experience can be valuable when seeking future employment as it demonstrates the student’s ability to apply theory to practice.

Moreover, the program gives an excellent platform for networking and building relationships with professionals in the technology industry. Students can learn from experienced mentors and develop relationships that can help them secure future employment opportunities.

Providing Holistic Career Foundations for Students

SAP Indonesia’s Managing Director (MD) Andreas Diantoro highlights that the SAP STAR program demonstrates the importance of know-how and know-who in the world of work. The initiative offers a full-year rotation system where students can explore different roles, build their technical and business skills, and gain experience in various parts of the company.

Throughout the program, students work with mentors who serve as counselors and supervisors. This enables them to learn directly from experienced professionals and gain insights from both SAP and its customers. Additionally, the program aims to provide a holistic and strategic overview of employment in the technology industry, helping students build a solid career foundation.

The SAP STAR program has been running for two periods since 2022, and its rotation system prepares students in a mature way by exposing them to the problems of each division. This comprehensive experience equips them with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in the technology industry.

According to Diantoro, the tech giant has developed an initiative aimed at refining key skills, such as critical and objective thinking, problem-solving and innovation, confident presentation abilities, adeptness with advanced technology, and professionalism coupled with a proactive attitude.

“The point is, SAP STAR participants must be proactive, learn a lot, and get to know their seniors so that this program can positively impact their learning process,” he remarked.

Accessing and Preparing for the Internship Program

Interested individuals can access information about the SAP STAR program and its registration and selection process on SAP’s website. The registration and selection period runs from August to October each year. Candidates can also find details about the qualifications required for SAP STAR participants on the website.

Apart from preparing the necessary documents, candidates should equip themselves with knowledge and insights in the IT and business fields to ensure a smooth selection process. Successful candidates proceed to the onboarding stage, where they get introduced to SAP and the various roles they will undertake during their internship period.

While SAP provides several valuable opportunities for internship activities, candidates are also encouraged to take a proactive approach to get the most out of the program.

Malaysia’s digital economy contributed some 18.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2017 according to Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), an agency under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia.

Malaysia’s Digital Economy is continuously growing and SAP Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a global enterprise software leader founded in 1992, remains focused in growing with it.

According to Claus Andresen, SAP President and Managing Director (Southeast Asia), as the digital economy intensifies, SAP remains steadfastly focused on encompassed areas such as nurturing talent, growing the local ecosystem, and in having established a service delivery center in Kuala Lumpur for the SeA region.

He said:

“SAP aims to support every company to become a best-run business. Together, we help the world run better and improve people’s lives throughout the world.”

Andersen emphasized that SAP has witnessed and contributed to Malaysia’s digital economy growth being in the country for 27 years.

He added that SAP continues to develop human capital for Malaysia with regards to talent and education front.

“Under the SAP University Alliances initiative, SAP continues to collaborate with MDEC in the MyUniAlliance programme which provides training for some three thousand students per year,” Andersen stated.

The Managing Director added that since the programme started in 2011, eighteen Institutes of Higher Learning [IHL], including two foreign universities, have already participated in the programme.

Andersen said:

“These IHLs bring SAP’s technology and best practices to students in undergraduate and graduate programmes. Should these graduates go on to become SAP consultants, they could expect to be one of the best consultants in the industry.”

With regards to Malaysia as an ICT hub, Andersen mentioned last year that Malaysia is the chosen country to be SAP’s Solution Delivery Center (SDC) catering to enterprises in SeA. This strategy has increased cost-effectiveness and scalable service delivery while addressing customer proximity for enterprises employing SAP technologies within SeA.

He explained:

“Malaysia lies at the heart of SEA where there are various multinational companies (MNCs) operating out of the country. ”

Aside from Malaysia’s strategic location within SeA, the other reasons for choosing the country to be an SAP SDC are its robust infrastructure, dynamic business environment, and skilled workforce as its greatest asset.

“The workforce in Malaysia is young, educated and productive, proving to be one of the best in the region. Diversity is one of Malaysia’s greatest strengths, and our objective is to provide SAP’s customers with access to the best global network of consultants with expertise in SAP’s latest technologies,” Andersen added.

SAP also continues to support the local ecosystem by working with local business partners in helping them develop innovative home-grown solutions just like how it worked for SBOne Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TFP Solutions Bhd and certified SAP partner. The company offers professional SAP B1 consultancy and expertise to small-medium enterprises (SMEs) throughout Malaysia.

Davinder Singh, SBOne Vice President shared that in the aspect of educating the SME community on the importance of technology, SBOne and SAP are working together with organizations like SME Corp.

He said:

“SMEs need to realize the role of technology as a business enabler that paves the way to greater profitability and operational efficiencies.”

Singh explained that SBOne’s solutions are based on the SAP B1 platform, which aims to simplify processes for the SMEs’ enhanced productivity. Currently, the company is also enhancing the SAP B1 platform to address the halal market’s needs.

The VP stated that the company shares SAP’s vision of the ‘intelligent enterprise’ as equal to being a best-run business.

“Together with SAP, our strategy is, therefore, to deliver the ‘intelligent enterprise’ for our customers, so that they can achieve their desired outcomes,” Singh said.

Duncan Williamson, reporting directly to Andersen, is SAP Malaysia’s Managing Director responsible for driving business growth and operations for Malaysia.
