SAP FieldGlass Deployed to Improve External Workforce

Banking, a traditionally ultra-conservative industry, is embracing new technologies to help it take profits and customer experience to new levels. In the US, MUFG Union Bank, part of the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), has been working with SAP Fieldglass to improve its external workforce management, attracted by the platform’s proven capabilities in financial services and track record for providing excellent user experiences.

The initial relationship began in 2010 when the bank selected SAP Fieldglass to help them get a better handle on their contingent labour, which includes business resources such as accountants, auditors, business analysts and consultants as well as IT resources.

In 2014, an affiliate bank heard positive feedback about the SAP Fieldglass program and decided to implement an external talent management program as well. The SAP team worked with the new bank for six months to set up their program and later that year the banks were integrated, although maintaining different financial systems and some processes, such as onboarding.

SAP Fieldglass benefits include both transparency and flexibility. Business unit CFOs depend on the platform’s reporting for their forecasting with executives. As external labour metrics are key to the business, reports are provided to the Executive Committee on a quarterly basis.

Business groups each manage differently and they have been able to tailor the platform to meet their specific needs. “The advantage to working with SAP Fieldglass is the flexibility. We have had to ask for a lot of things to meet our needs, and the account support has been fantastic. We really feel that Fieldglass puts customers first. It’s been a great experience,” said Sandra Buhler, director, Contingent Workforce Management, MUFG Union Bank.

In addition to account support excellence, the bank is discovering how efficiently integrations can occur with SAP Fieldglass. Current integrations with HR and finance systems went smoothly and as planned. The integration also supports mandatory compliance training requirements for all contingent workers that have access to bank systems.

“We have had ongoing positive feedback internally about the SAP Fieldglass platform. We have a solution that will carry us into the future and support our global needs as we evolve,” said Buhler.

That future is starting now, with the bank beginning to implement Worker Profile, to provide them with visibility into resources doing work under a Statement of Work. The objective is to have a single system of record for all non-employees who have system, badge or network access. Next, MUFG Union Bank plans to work with SAP Fieldglass to automate the onboarding and offboarding processes for contingent workers, explore the services procurement solution to actively manage that spend, and expand their program globally.

SAP Fieldglass Live Insights, which is powered by SAP HANA, is the product of a partnership with SAP Data Network. Organisations can use the solution to benchmark market rates, hiring cycle times and supplier performance using SAP Fieldglass data and trusted third-party data that has been aggregated, anonymised and normalised. Employee data can also be uploaded into the solution to gain visibility of their talent across channels in real time.

“With access to the most robust data via SAP Fieldglass Live Insights, our customers can analyse and make decisions at speed about their external talent – arguably one of their most valuable assets – as they race to become more competitive in every aspect of their business,” said Rob Brimm, president, SAP Fieldglass.

“SAP Fieldglass Live Insights is the latest example of our commitment to help organisations transform how work gets done in a digital world where companies must move quickly to activate their workforce strategies and secure the talent that best suits their needs.”

According to SAP, having insight into where to source the right skills at the most competitive rates and being able to requisition that talent will allow organisations to conduct cost-benefit analysis in real time informing external talent decisions, determining competitive rates for talent that is needed to launch a new product or service, and identify the optimal time to release requisitions for striking a balance between lead time and cost.

“With SAP Fieldglass Live Insights, we were able to put the extracted value of ready-to-analyse transactional data into the hands of our customers for the first time in a way that is immediately actionable for their external workforce strategies, helping to keep our customers one step ahead of the fight for talent,” said Helen Arnold, president, SAP Data Network.

SAP Fieldglass is going after the mid-market with the launch of SAP Fieldglass Flex, a cloud solution to facilitate the sourcing, hiring and management of external labour.

The solution aims to address the growing need for external labour management technology amongst medium-sized businesses, particularly as they look to leverage alternative talent pools to address skill shortages.

According to SAP Fieldglass, Flex has been designed specifically for the needs of the mid-market, and is engineered for rapid set-up, providing complete visibility and control over external talent to drive efficiencies. Organisations can manage their compliance obligations and easily answer questions around who is working for them, what work they are doing and how much they are paid.

“As mid-sized enterprises continue to increase their use of flexible talent, the technology to manage these workers will play a pivotal role in their external workforce management programs,” said Christopher Dwyer, research director, Ardent Partners. “As this market increasingly engages with a more blended workforce, it will require technology that can enhance talent engagement, improve cost savings and maintain critical visibility.”

The percentage of external workers is predicted to grow from 35 per cent in 2016 to more than 50 per cent within a few years.
