State-run telecom provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will help organisations of all sizes throughout India to create, consolidate and file their Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns through SAP, in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding between BSNL and SAP.

The partnership is intended to simplify the GST process for organisations, particularly SMEs, by leveraging the strengths of BSNL as GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) and SAP as Application Service Provider (ASP). BSNL, which views the GST as an enabler of digital growth in India, currently serves approximately 115 million customers across the nation.

“As an intrinsic part of the Government’s Digital India initiative, we see GST as an important tool in the process for nation building,” said Shri Anupam Srivastava, chairman and managing director, BSNL. “Our mission is to ensure that every business in every town and village in the nation successfully adopts GST,” he said.

“As we complete nearly a year since implementation of GST, the nation’s indirect tax system has streamlined considerably,” said Hemant Dabke, vice president – Strategic Industries, SAP Indian Subcontinent.

“Our collaboration with BSNL is a step further in our continued efforts at fast-tracking GST compliance in the country and will extend this success to tier II and tier III markets of the country.”

Launched on July 1, 2017, the GST initiative is one of India’s largest tax reforms. Under the tax regime, more than 51 million SMEs in India are in a position to reinvest in or redefine their business processes.

The new regime is intended to ensure that indirect tax rates and structures in India are common across the nation and to remove the previous cascading taxes by applying a system of tax credits throughout the value chain.

A new agreement between PCCW Global, the international operating division of Hong Kong telecommunications service provider HKT, and SAP Digital Interconnect (formerly SAP Mobile Services) will see the two companies’ Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) domains merged into a single domain.

The move comes in response to an increase and acceleration of subscriber demand in LTE and a broader range of mobile services, requiring service providers to adapt to the rapidly increasing rate of growth in data traffic.

“By combining the strength of SAP Digital Interconnect, an industry leader in global roaming services, with PCCW Global’s voice footprint and extensive MPLS backbone, we aim to deliver customers unrivalled scale, quality and flexibility in mobile services. This collaboration has extensive future potential globally and is intended to benefit operators both in the short- and mid-term,” said Sethu Meenakshisundaram, president, SAP Digital Interconnect.

The new single IPX offering will enable the delivery of new and advanced services such as high-quality GRX, LTE data roaming, diameter, SCCP, Flex IPX (bandwidth on-demand), VoIPX, VoLTE and Globalview for advanced analytics and reporting.

Leading Hong Kong mobile network operator and an operating division of HKT, CSL, will use the combined IPX domain.

“We are delighted to be one of the first to benefit from this latest development. With PCCW Global and SAP Digital Interconnect, we can now access a broad range of services that support both our current and future needs,” said Richard Midgett, managing director, wireless business, HKT.

A SAP HANA ERP system has been chosen as a mission critical system for a joint state-run telecommunications project in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The project was led by KDDI Corporation together with Sumitomo Corporation, in collaboration with the government-run Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT).

KDDI and Sumitomo reached agreement with the Myanmar government to work together to advance the telecommunications business in July 2014, and then launched a local subsidiary to undertake the work. At the outset of the project, accounting work and other operations were relying on handwritten slips and other manual processes.

With the Myanmar government promoting initiatives aimed at raising the nation’s cellphone ownership rate, additional technology is required to accelerate the introduction and use of accounting systems and other integrated mission critical systems.

The implementation of SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA commenced in September 2015. Though given the underdeveloped state of Myanmar’s infrastructure environment, it was estimated about two months would be required just to secure the hardware.

Using Amazon Web Services as the development environment, the project was completed in only half a year without waiting for the deployment of the hardware first, and the new system is currently being incorporated into the business unit’s operations.
