Malaysian renewable energy company Sarawak Energy Berhad has partnered with software-enabled services provider Lemongrass to assist in the SAP to AWS cloud migration project aimed at accelerating digital transformation.

Generation, transmission, distribution, and retail of electricity are the foundation of Sarawak Energy Berhad’s core business operations. The company produces electricity by utilising the state of Sarawak’s vast resources — supplying power to consumers across the state and beyond through a wide network of distribution facilities. In 2019, Sarawak Energy Berhad joined several leading Malaysian enterprises in leveraging SAP solutions such as SAP Concur and SAP Leonardo to help boost its productivity and efficiency that are needed for the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Reinforcing its commitment to transforming the company into a “digital utility powerhouse,” the renewable energy producer forged a multi-year strategic collaboration with Lemongrass to facilitate the migration of its SAP applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Lemongrass’ professional and managed services teams in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region are leading the project, which is aligned with Sarawak Energy’s goal of improving its digitalisation infrastructure in order to provide the citizens of Sarawak a modernised electricity network.

According to Sim Ko Sin, Senior Vice President for Information and Communications Technology at Sarawak Energy Berhad, among the goals of the Sarawak Energy Excellence 2022 roadmap is the transformation of the company into a sustainable digital utility by 2025. Last year, Sarawak Energy demonstrated its vision for sustainable hydropower development and management (IHA) with the expansion of its in-house HSAP (Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol) and HESG (Hydropower Environmental, Social, and Governance) assessors. Sim Ko Sin explained:

“We continue to learn and adopt new technologies to maintain our relevance and grow value, leveraging digital technologies to stay competitive in this age of rapid change. This also requires us to establish purposeful collaboration with partners who have the required expertise and tools.

“We are happy to have Lemongrass onboard to help support our digitalisation journey,” she added.

Partnering with Lemongrass for SAP to AWS Cloud Migration

Moreover, Sarawak Energy has begun the process of migrating its existing SAP S/4HANA system to the AWS cloud in order to achieve cost-effectiveness, security, stability, and flexibility for its SAP assets. Having conducted a thorough search and evaluation of numerous value-added service providers, the company selected Lemongrass for the transition and management of its core applications.

With customers spanning various industries and countries in the Americas, EMEA, and APAC, Lemongrass has been moving SAP users to the cloud since 2010 and currently handles more than 6,000 SAP servers and over 300,000 users worldwide. The IT firm’s Executive Vice President of Asia-Pacific Jason Nicholl expressed his delight at the opportunity to collaborate with Sarawak Energy as it keeps up with an ongoing digital transformation program.

“Our work together will result in a highly secure, stable, and flexible SAP environment on AWS with enhanced levels of automation. Malaysia remains an important market for Lemongrass and we look forward to a long partnership with Sarawak Energy locally, regionally, and globally,” he further shared.

In October, Lemongrass went above and beyond its SAP on AWS capabilities to take advantage of the growing demand for SAP on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in the hyperscaler market. GCP data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) tools are leveraged to deliver the company’s standard SAP migration services as part of the partnership with Google.

SAP has been encouraging local businesses to undergo transformation to become “intelligent enterprises” to boost their efficiency and productivity as we live in the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Sarawak Energy joins some of the leading Malaysian international brands that are transitioning for the 4IR.

At the Intelligent Enterprise Conference, Zaliha Mohd-Ali, Sarawak’s Energy’s senior manager, explained:

“Sarawak Energy’s core business activities revolve around the generation, transmission, distribution and retail of electricity. We generate power by capitalising on Sarawak’s abundant indigenous resources – hydro, coal and gas – and supply electricity to our customers throughout Sarawak and beyond through an extensive network.”

During the conference, Mohd-Ali also talked about SAP’s role in digitalising the company’s operations.

“Technology is integral toward our vision of ‘transforming Sarawak Energy into a digital utility powerhouse’, and one of our core foundations is based on SAP.”

She also cited the “Sarawak Energy People System”, the company’s integrated human resources management system, as an example of their efforts to improve employee productivity. This included consolidating different tools into one system to help employees save time and resources. The employees were also given access to performance tools on their mobile devices, including the ability to apply for leaves.

The energy company also adopted SAP Concur to get better visibility of its travel and expense spend. The spend management solution also gave employees user-friendly experiences.

SAP Leonardo Vehicle Insights digital innovation system also helped Sarawak Energy in reducing accidents and increasing safety awareness of its drivers. The IoT (internet-of-things) technology has provided real-time monitoring of vehicles.

Currently, Sarawak Energy is also studying SAP S/4 HANA as part of its efforts towards digital transformation.

SAP Asia Pacific and Japan’s Chief Operating Officer, Rachel Barger, also talked about SAP’s ability to help enterprises in making them ‘future ready.’

She said:

“SAP S/4 HANA helps to reduce obstacles associated with legacy enterprise resource planning applications.”

At present, SAP’s has more than 437,000 customers across 180 countries worldwide including Forbes Global 2000 companies and 100 of the most valued brands.
