This month, new SAP sustainability programs have been announced in China to help local companies become sustainable, intelligent enterprises.

The German enterprise software giant’s leading position in the industry emphasizes its quest to build solutions that assist organizations in running better and in a more sustainable way. In November of 2021, Terra Carta — a charter that establishes the framework of a recovery plan to 2030 putting Nature, People, and Planet at the center of value creation — highlighted the sustainability initiatives that SAP has implemented both within the organization and its ecosystem. This reinforces SAP’s unrelenting commitment to being an exemplary leader in promoting technological innovation while simultaneously integrating sustainability throughout all of its business operations.

In China, SAP has formed a “Sustainable Development and Practice Strategic Alliance” to create a platform to join forces with many players in the sector, focus on their respective expertise, shine a spotlight on collaborative innovation, and enable Chinese enterprises in accelerating the realization of the country’s “dual carbon” goal. The alliance can be broken down into four categories: co-creation with customers, consultancy and methodologies, policy and people, and solutions and practices. SAP Global Executive Vice President and President at SAP Greater China Dr. Chenhong Huang believes that emerging Chinese businesses are innovative, collaborative, and environmentally conscious, and that the idea of sustainable development is on par with the promotion of business transformation. He went on to say that companies must integrate sustainable development into the processes of their major strategies and ventures.

“Using digital processes means to realize the visualization, transparency and quantification of carbon emission data, realize carbon reduction, meet dynamic regulatory needs and international trade rules, and discover new business opportunities. We will adhere to the principle of “in China, for China’s philosophy”, to be a fellow traveler for the sustainable development of a new Chinese enterprise,” Huang further explained.

New SAP Sustainability Measures in China

The School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, the joint innovation model unit State Grid Digital Science and Technology, and several local and global SAP partners are among the first 10 founding members of the “Sustainable Development and Practice Strategic Alliance.”  SAP’s latest set of initiatives intend to enable businesses to achieve their goals of lowering their carbon footprint and fostering economic growth through a variety of productive channels, including data transparency, industrial collaboration, and innovative business practices.

Commenting on the new partnership, Professor Bai Chong’en, Dean at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, stated in the SAP Sustainability Forum:

“We are very happy to join the “Sustainable Development and Practice Strategic Alliance” to jointly promote the healthy development of the industry and contribute to the realization of high-quality economic development in China.”

Moreover, the “Panjin Index” framework has also been officially unveiled in the SAP Sustainability Forum.  This is a holistic index of urban sustainable development that assesses pertinent variables such as safety, economy, and green development in a comprehensive manner. It is anticipated that the “Panjin Index” will become a useful instrument that will aid cities in the process of implementing sustainable development goals.

The project was initially discussed in an in-depth discussion last year between SAP and the Panjin City Government. Under the agreement, SAP assisted Panjin in the development of a system for the monitoring and simulation of urban carbon emissions by supplying a suite of software and solutions that were built on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

Thrilled to being working closely with the German tech giant in a sustainability program, Xing Peng, Deputy Secretary of Panjin Municipal Party Committee and Mayor, said:

“We are very happy it (Panjin City) can cooperate with SAP to establish a green development and dual-carbon innovation center project, jointly create a comprehensive urban carbon management plan, and strive to explore new paths for sustainable development practices in the province and the country, as well as for local governments to take into account low-carbon management and economic development.”

An increasing number of organisations leverage SAP software and solutions to take on their climate ambitions and accelerate their participation in achieving sustainable economic growth.

Recently, the German tech giant took a spot in the A List of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international organisation widely regarded as the gold standard of environmental reporting. The CDP’s coveted A List announces more than 300 companies that are paving the way toward a more sustainable future. Furthermore, this recognition comes just a few weeks after SAP was hailed as a software industry leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for the 15th year in a row.

The company’s position in these leading sustainability rankings establishes SAP as a front-runner in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Luka Mucic, Member of the Executive Board and Chief Financial Officer at SAP, remarked:

“We remain firmly committed to leading by example in our efforts to run our business sustainably and report our progress. Equally important is that we share our knowledge with our customers and enable them to achieve their own climate goals with our growing portfolio of sustainability solutions.”

SAP stands out as an exemplar when it comes to disclosing sustainability metrics after receiving top scores in the CDP and DJSI rankings. With that said, SAP software and solutions aim to enable businesses to do due diligence on their own performance by assisting them in measuring and monitoring emissions.

Among those that have already invested in digital technologies to help achieve their environmental objectives is the People’s Government of Panjin Municipality in China. Last month, the Panjin City Government and SAP held an in-depth discussion to share their views on the “Green Development Platform Project” in Shuangtaizi District where digital technologies will play a crucial role in the implementation of China’s “dual carbon” goals. (InsideSAP Asia often references articles from websites in other languages to bring you as much information as possible.)

The high-level meeting took place after the two parties signed an agreement to establish the “Green Development and Double Carbon Innovation Center” at the 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE). During the annual event, SAP showcased its latest technology solutions and services and forged several strategic agreements with other Chinese firms.

Achieving Sustainability Goals Through SAP Software and Solutions

Moreover, Dr. Huang Chenhong, SAP Global Executive Vice President and President of Greater China, believes green development is the only option to meet the “dual carbon” targets. He added that digital technology can enable the effective implementation of low-carbon strategies. Commenting on the partnership with the Panjin City Government, he stated:

“SAP attaches great importance to cooperation with Panjin City. We look forward to helping Panjin achieve green and low-carbon development through innovative technologies, and working hand in hand to contribute to China’s dual-carbon goal.”

As part of the new collaboration, SAP will provide a series of digital solutions based on the SAP Business Technology Platform to help Panjin develop an urban carbon emissions monitoring and simulation system. This is on top of improving urban operations, facilitating industrial restructuring, and advancing a low-carbon economy. In addition, the German enterprise software giant will also actively engage in the creation of the “Panjin Index”.

Furthermore, Scott Russell, Executive Board Member and Head of Customer Success at SAP, said that SAP and the Panjin City Government will build an eco-city of the future through this partnership. He added in a LinkedIn post:

“This initiative marks the beginning of a profoundly impactful journey in sustainable development. Looking forward to continuing our journey of creating a greener future for both our people and planet!”
