A leading hospital operator in Indonesia is working with SAP Indonesia, PT Abyor International and T-Systems, to deliver integrated systems across their hospitals to improve operational and cost efficiency, and improve patient medical services.

Mitra Keluarga has one of the leading hospital networks in Indonesia, managing 12 hospitals across the Greater Jakarta region in the Central and Eastern Java provinces, with plans to add six more by 2019.

The healthcare solutions that will allow Mitra Keluarga to run hospitals in real time encompass operational and clinical solutions, covering financials, procurement, inventory, patient management, billing and electronic medical records (EMR), as well as solutions from Cerner i.s.h.med from SAP, on the SAP HANA platform.

The hospital operator will use SAP Electronic Medical Record and Business Process Management to gain access to a single source of clinical, organisational and financial data at the point of care, for more personalised patient interaction. The company-wide central EMR will be available on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, promoting better collaboration and real-time information exchange amongst patients and physicians and nurses, for improved patient diagnosis and treatment.

SAP’s billing solution will allow cross-department bills (for different treatments) to be consolidated into one main bill, while the SAP ERP application powered by SAP HANA will manage Mitra Keluarga’s hospital information system, managing business processes and operational efficiency across the group’s hospitals.

“Mitra Keluarga is not merely just a place where patients seek an improvement in health, but is also a home that welcomes everyone, embracing health as part of a lifestyle that is deeply engrained to Mitra Keluarga’s heart. At Mitra Keluarga, we endeavour to work towards helping our patients receive the best care by delivering quality treatment to all patients. however, doing so was a great challenge in the absence of an integrated information system,” said Ir. Rustiyan Oen, president director, Mitra Keluarga.

“By leveraging the expertise of SAP, working together with partners PT Abyor International and T-Systems, we hope to continue to deliver world-class medical services through simplifying business processes, reducing costs and achieving insightful, faster decision making. These benefits give us an opportunity to improve the quality and safety of patient care, reduce inefficiencies and wastage as well as promote better management and administration of the hospital environment itself.”

Hari Tjahjono, president director of PT Abhor International, said implementing SAP for Healthcare solutions requires extensive experience and knowledge, as well as a deep understanding of hospital business processes.

“With this implementation, we believe Mitra Keluarga will benefit from process optimisation within the organisation, not only in the back office but also in the processes around patient treatment,” said Tjahjono.

The system will first be deployed in one of the group’s hospitals, then becoming the template project for roll-outs to the rest of its hospitals in Indonesia. Mitra Keluarga will eventually have a centralised IT system that provides electronically integrated patient files, and improved visibility across the enterprise for better planning and faster execution.

T-Systems, another partner on the project, has successfully implemented similar technology for community and private hospitals in Singapore.

With healthcare costs skyrocketing around the world, and the growth of chronic conditions only increasing the financial burden on governments and individuals, SAP has launched a new solution to tackle this issue.

SAP Health Engagement, which has been built on the HANA Cloud Platform, will allow health providers, health insurers and pharmaceutical companies the ability to build custom applications to help patients track their health through goal-setting and personalised assessments for chronic diseases and conditions.

By linking patients to healthcare professionals through real-time data and high-speed analytics, the technology will also physicians and health program managers to implement early interventions to improve health outcomes and lower healthcare costs.

The solution grew out of a partnership between SAP and Roche Diabetes Care Germany, which saw the creation of the SAP Heath Link solution, for the prevention of diabetes. SAP Health Link facilitated connections through digital services between healthcare professionals and patents at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, to encourage lifestyle changes.

SAP drew on the insights from this partnership as well as feedback from other customers to structure SAP Health Engagement as a flexible development toolkit that can be used to create applications tailored to any chronic disease or conditions. These applications could also be used to engage patients in clinical trials, and provide personalised home care.

“In principle, this platform has the potential to improve and individualise the cooperation between physicians and patients for any kind of chronic disease,” said Dirk Uebelhor, head of Roche Diabetes Care Germany.

Customers can be onboarded for the solution by scanning a unique QR code, which then allows data to be pulled from the back-end database into their mobile device. SAP Health Engagement can also patient-generated and wearable sensor data in the mobile application.

Program managers can create customised wellness programs, delivered through a mobile healthcare consumer application, and patient data can be collected and stored securely in order to be utilised for research. The solution gives patients full control of their personal health data and access privileges for this information.

SAP CEO Bill McDermott’s own health crisis this year, after an accident in which he lost an eye, has seen the company focus attention on the advancement of personalised medicine.

SAP has now launched the SAP Foundation for Health and the SAP Medical Research Insights solution, built on the HANA platform, to facilitate the integration of patient data, from biomedical data to electronic medical records to clinical trials.

“SAP is committed to helping the world run better and improving people’s lives, and what better way to fulfil this pledge than by developing software to advance personalised medicine,” said McDermott. “The healthcare industry’s first step will be transforming core business operations with a live system strategy built on the SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA suite of applications. With SAP Foundation for Health powered by SAP HANA, you get an unprecedented ability to handle inputs like medical research, electronic health records and human genome sequencing. With SAP Medical Research Insights we’re coming even closer to better access to data and more positive patient outcomes.”

SAP Foundation for Health will provide a flexible and extensible clinical data warehouse model, as well as analytics on large-scale structured and unstructured data, enabling life sciences companies and healthcare organisations to develop and target new drugs, devices and services, and undertake real-time flexible R&D analysis, patient cohort building and analysis, patient trial matching, and extended care collaboration solutions.

The first solution to run on SAP Foundation for Health is SAP Medical Insights, which was codeveloped with the National Centre for Tumor Diseases (NCT) and has already received a prestigious Red Dot Design Award.

The NCT, which delivers patient care, cancer research and cancer prevention, was operating on an old system with required medical staff to search multiple databases, compile patient lists, print patient files and manually check if patients matched criteria for clinical trials by reviewing each file individually. This made accessing and analysing patient data an extremely complex and time-consuming process.

“The team from the NCT worked closely with the SAP Innovation Center site to conduct observations, incorporate feedback and iterate in short cycles, which resulted in a well-rounded, award-winning solution,” said Professor Dr Christof von Kalle, managing director of the NCT and head of Translational Oncology.

“With SAP Medical Research Insights, medical staff can visualise and analyse patient data in real time due to the speed of SAP HANA and simple app design. This provides a holistic view of a patient’s medical history in a graphical timeline, allowing physicians more time to care for patients instead of going through paperwork. It also dramatically reduces the turnaround time for clinical studies, which can ultimately lead to life-changing discoveries.”

SAP has also partnered with the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) non-profit subsidiary, CancerLinQ to develop a health information technology platform that will harness big data from millions of de-identified patient records to deliver high-quality, personalised care to people with cancer and cancer survivors.

“With our cancer expertise complemented by SAP’s unique ability to break down data silos and provide real-time analytics on massive amounts of federated clinical data, CancerLinQ is in a position to make a huge leap toward becoming the platform of choice for oncologists,” said Kevin Fitzpatrick, CEO, CancerLinQ.
