As the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) deadline rolls around, and in response to increasing consumer demand for more transparency and control over their personal data, SAP has released SAP Customer Data Cloud from Gigya, creating a competitive advantage for enterprises complying with multiple levels of regulations governing data privacy.

“Businesses now have the opportunity to turn compliance into a competitive advantage,” said Patrick Salyer, CEO, Gigya.

SAP Customer Data Cloud, which includes the SAP Customer Identity, SAP Customer Consent, and SAP Customer Profile solutions, provides a transparent, flexible, and secure digital experience to enable enterprises to improve customer retention and brand loyalty. The consent-based solution is expected to address regional consumer privacy laws, including GDPR, by centrally capturing, managing, and synchronising preferences and consent in accordance with regulations throughout the SAP system and customer lifecycle.

“Companies are using a lot of different methods and corresponding third-party data to infer what a customer wants, often resulting in a creepy personal customer experience,” said Alex Atzberger, president, SAP Customer Experience, SAP.

“SAP Customer Data Cloud will provide marketers the opportunity to ask about customers’ preferences. If customers know what personal data is being used and they have control over its use, they will be more inclined to allow that data to be used for delivering personalised content and services, ultimately improving their experience.”

“Earning the trust of your customers isn’t just a matter of compliance anymore. It’s a matter of top-line growth, bottom-line sensibility, and overall success – for every business,” said Salyer.

“Mark my words, the age of the customer is here, and only businesses that put their customers wants, needs, and preferences front and centre will thrive within it, and our colleagues across the SAP global organisation agree. With sophisticated cybercrime and ‘fake news’ on the rise and a digitally savvy public, poor data practices are a big problem that needs to be solved, and the GDPR just made solving that problem the top priority for every company,” he said.

SAP has introduced a range of innovations to its enterprise information management (EIM) portfolio, some of which are designed to cater for the introduction of Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) from May 2018.

Among these new features is the expansion of discovery, cleansing, masking and encryption of personal data to more sources. Archiving, restriction and deletion of personal data can be managed holistically across data in applications and associated content, such as purchase orders, invoices and HR documents.

SAP has also released a trial service of new data anonymisation capabilities that enable companies to address privacy requirements while creating meaningful data sets for analysis and processing.

Other innovations are designed to simplify data management, particularly for SAP S/4HANA, with additional functionality for data quality, master data management, content management and information lifecycle management capabilities. SAP Master Data Governance on S/4HANA provides consolidation, mass processing, central governance and master data quality analytics.

The updates also include new and expanded support for Amazon Redshift and Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute, Microsoft Azure Cloud and SQL Data Warehouse, and Google Cloud Platform.

“Information is the foundation of a digital business,” said Greg McStravick, ‎SAP ‎president, database and data management.

“Whether companies are looking at digital transformation from a business network, IoT or big data and analytics perspective, information governance is crucial to their success. Our portfolio updates help our customers run a live business by making data trusted, complete, secure and relevant for their business processes and analytics.”

Enterprise cybersecurity and compliance specialist Onapsis has added new automated product functionality to its Onapsis Security Platform to cater for GDPR compliance mandates, which will come into effect from May 2018.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an EU regulation which concerns the protection of EU data subjects’ personal and sensitive information. Recent research conducted by the UK and Ireland SAP User Group shows 86 per cent of SAP users do not fully understand how GDPR will affect their SAP landscapes and how to reach compliance.

Onapsis’ new functionality will allow customers to quickly evaluate if their SAP systems are meeting the requirements of this mandate to protect EU data subjects’ information.

“In speaking to our customers, we know that GDPR is a complicated mandate and many organisations are struggling to determine if or how their SAP landscapes are relevant. With this in mind, Onapsis’s newly released audit policy within the Onapsis Security Platform automatically evaluates any SAP system through the lens of the data protection requirements of the GDPR. This includes both data at rest, data in transit and the assessment of data access or authorisations,” said Alex Horan, director of product management, Onapsis.

By using this policy, enterprises can identify SAP systems that do not have adequate protection of the data and processes, and receive detailed guidance on how to address these security gaps.
