Cement-Building Materials Business, a core business unit of Siam Cement Group (SCG), has recently upgraded its enterprise resource planning system by migrating SAP to GCP (Google Cloud Platform). Over the next five years, the company will be assisted by DXC Technology in accelerating its SAP S/4HANA cloud transformation journey.

Since its inception in 1913, SCG has evolved and diversified into three core industries, namely Cement-Building Materials Business, Chemicals Business, and Packaging Business. The 108-year-old multinational company is among the largest and oldest construction material firms in Thailand and Southeast Asia. Despite being a leading business conglomerate in ASEAN, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown protocols impacted its business unit which is centered on cement and concrete product manufacturing and distribution.

According to SCG President and Chief Executive Roongrote Rangsiyopash, the company plans to focus on resilience and agility in its business processes to recover from the pandemic and retain its growth momentum. He said that SCG’s business strategy and quick adjustments to keep operations in line with global trends will enable it to weather the COVID-19 crisis.

Recently, the company’s Cement-Building Materials Business has been added to the list of SAP customers that have successfully shifted to a cloud-based ERP solution. It can be noted that last month, Noppadon Chareonthong, SAP Sales Director, Thailand and Emerging Market, emphasised that cloud-based services will play a crucial role in strengthening companies’ operational capability as the country adapts to the post-pandemic business environment.

Tapping IT services provider DXC Technology as its implementation partner, Cement-Building Materials Business transitioned from on-premises systems to Google Cloud Platform. For over a decade now, the two companies have collaborated on infrastructure and outsourcing managed services, private cloud managed services, and security, as well as application deployment and maintenance.

DXC Technology Accelerates SAP to GCP Migration for SCG’s Cement-Building Materials Business

Expounding on SAP and DXC Technology’s long-standing strategic partnership and how it can help customers like SCG’s Cement-Building Materials Business to foster stronger innovation within the organisation, SAP Indochina Managing Director Atul Tuli shared:

“Move to cloud will help Cement-Building Materials Business of SCG leverage recognition of SAP S/4HANA, an intelligent ERP solution across cloud, working in harmony to unlock new levels of performance across an organisation. It will also help Cement-Building Materials Business of SCG take advantage of new opportunities and manage dynamic market environments.”

Moreover, the construction firm wanted better enterprise-wide visibility across its business functions after previously running on numerous instances of SAP ERP applications. Since the deployment of SAP workloads to GCP assisted by a focused approach defined by DXC, Cement-Building Materials Business was able to:

  • Allow 1000 employees to use the integrated solution across various aspects of sourcing and procurement, manufacturing, production planning, finance, sales, and supply chain.
  • Streamline SAP instances by shifting SAP workloads to GCP with Platform as a Service (PaaS) and making them available across the network, which spans 33 enterprises in 14 countries.
  • Scale its ERP systems up and down in response to changing customer demands and data levels.
  • Deploy mission-critical IT applications to the cloud faster and with less disturbance to the user community.

Maximising the Value of Cloud

Commenting on the SAP upgrade project, Khun Tharinee Chucharoen, Digital Technology Manager of Regional Business at Cement-Building Materials Business of SCG, said the company turned to digital technology and cloud to stay ahead of other competitors in the sector.

“Along with a trusted partner in DXC Technology, well-entrenched within our IT estate, helped us accelerate our digital transformation strategy with a cost-effective approach,” Chucharoen stressed.

Meanwhile, DXC Thailand Managing Director Apichart Arunkunarax stated that SCG’s Cement-Building Materials Business was able to utilise the value of cloud migration by establishing a cloud-based solution. Expressing delight at the partnership, he added that DXC will help the company navigate and thrive in its cloud transformation journey.

“This engagement demonstrates the strength of DXC capabilities across the Enterprise Technology Stack and our ability to move applications to cloud the right way to realise value on customer investments,” he further remarked.

As part of the project roadmap, SAP 4.7 entities will be onboarded onto a harmonised SAP S/4HANA platform to take advantage of new high-speed systems and innovation in Phase Two of the agreement.
