The platform formerly known as the SAP HANA Cloud Platform, will be expanded by SAP, adding new services to make it easy and fast to build new applications, expedite the extension and integration of SAP apps, drive innovative Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, accelerate big data projects, and enable machine learning and artificial intelligence applications.

SAP made the announcement at Mobile World Congress, held in Barcelona this week.

“Since the launch of our PaaS offering three years ago, it has evolved to become the digital enterprise platform of choice that enables customers, partners and developers to build differentiating solutions that intelligently connect people, things, and businesses,” said Bernd Leukert, member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, Products and Innovation.

“To represent its bread of capabilities, it has been rebranded as SAP Cloud Platform. This platform creates digital differentiation by connecting a rapidly growing number of smart devices and machines with people and processes to achieve superior business outcomes.”

Among the new services added to the platform are:

  • SAP API Business Hub, which provides a catalogue of APIs for SAP applications, such as new APIs for the S/4HANA Cloud suite, SAP Mobile Service application, and SAP Localisation Hub, tax service.
  • SAP Cloud Platform Workflow service, which will be generally available by March 30, will quickly and easily connect enterprise business functions within a graphical interface for business analysts to create new composite workflows for business processes.
  • SAP Cloud Platform IoT services, which is now available in a beta version with more than 40 device protocols. The new release will integrate IoT services with the SAP Cloud Platform Streaming Analytics service for faster processing of streaming data.
  • SAP Project Companion mobile app, which is planned for release on March 30. It is a native iOS app that its to provide integration through SAP Cloud Platform with the S/4HANA Professional Services Cloud solution.
  • SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services (formerly Altiscale) will offer Hadoop in the cloud.
  • SAP Cloud Platform Virtual Machine service, which was introduced in the EMEA region last November, will be offered in the US in Q1 2017. The service helps customers complete their solution landscapes by adding workloads based on existing on-premise software or languages and runtimes that can run directly on SAP Cloud Platform.

SAP will also be adding new data centres to support the Cloud Platform in Japan and China, with full local
language support.

Over 1000 applications have now been built by SAP and its partners on the SAP Cloud Platform.

Developers looking to build apps on the SAP HANA platform from wherever they are can now access a fully downloadable version of the platform from the SAP developer centre.

SAP HANA, express edition, was unveiled at the SAP TechEd conference in Las Vegas this week.

This free version of the HANA platform has a streamlined selection of features optimised for fast and continuous development of data-driven applications, and comes packaged with tutorials and sample code. Developers can use the express edition to develop, test and deploy productions applications that use up to 32 GB of memory for free or upgrade for a fee for more memory.

“Today’s fast-paced digital economy requires businesses to be extremely agile, with the ability to gain unlimited knowledge from any data type and data source located inside or outside the company,” said Irfan Khan, GM and global head, database and data management, SAP.

“SAP HANA, express edition, is easy to download and free of charge so developers can quickly start building powerful, modern applications using their programming language of choice rather than managing complex IT frameworks and infrastructures.”

The application can be installed on commodity servers, desktops or laptops using a binary installation package with support for either SUSE Linux Enterprise Server or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or installed on Windows or Mac OS by downloading a virtual machine installation page that is distributed with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

“With this new starter SAP HANA, express edition, we have been able to jump-start our development immediately, using our existing personal computers,” said Jean Safar, chief architect, Calypso Technology Inc.

“With the preconfigured virtual machine option, it has been really simple to get hands-on experience with in-memory technology and develop our initial version on sample risk-related data sets. Additionally, the availability of flexible upgrade options to full-use editions will help us further experiment and leverage SAP HANA to support our future technology innovation plans.”

Register to download SAP HANA, express edition, for free at the SAP developer center. SAP HANA, express edition, is also available via SAP Cloud Appliance Library, which provides deployment options for public cloud platforms.

A lack of transparency about where money is being spent and where bottlenecks occur during development is a common issue with SAP projects.

To combat this, Basis Technologies has now released DevAnalytics, a tool which provides metrics to identify waste, inefficiency and bottlenecks during development and delivery of SAP change.

It provides 35 delivery performance metrics across five key categories – velocity, cycle time, rework and waste, work in progress and approval time – enabling companies to understand where action needs to be taken to improve efficiency and optimise delivery. It also provides data to measure internal teams and external suppliers against benchmarks and performance metrics.

According to Basis, DevAnalytics supports the adoption of Agile and DevOps methodologies for SAP by providing a set of metrics that can be used to assess performance on an ongoing basis.

DevAnalytics is compatible with SAP instances running SAP Solution Manager, both cloud-based or on-premise. It is the latest addition to the company’s expanding DevOps Toolset for SAP, which also includes ShiftLeft for change analysis, Transport Expresso for automation, collaboration and auditing for change management, and DevMax, for the automation of conflict management.
